“Devolution” Romans 1:18-32 Pastor Erik J. Ferguson Sermon Idea: Man is descending downward rather than developing upward. Body: I. Fact #1: All of creation plainly reveals God’s existence (Romans 1:18-20). A. All of creation plainly reveals God’s eternal power. B. All of creation plainly reveals God’s divine nature--Psalm 19:1-6. C. Because all of creation plainly reveals God’s existence, “men are without excuse.” (1) Man cannot claim ignorance. (2) Man cannot claim superior wisdom or superior might. (3) Man cannot claim exemption. II. Fact #2: Created things mustn’t be worshipped, just God (Romans 1:21-23). A. Worshipping created things rather than worshipping God is futile. --Genesis 3:8. B. Worshipping created things rather than worshipping God is foolish. III. Fact #3: Every kind of evil can be traced back to man’s desire to worship created things, rather than worshipping man’s creator, God (Romans 1:2432). A. Evil #1: Sexual impurity can be traced back to man’s ignoring of God’s many fingerprints in creation, and then rebelliously worshipping created things, rather than worshipping man’s creator, God--1 Corinthians 6:16. B. Evil #2: Shameful lusts can be traced back to man’s ignoring of God’s many fingerprints in creation, and then rebelliously worshipping created things, rather than worshipping man’s creator, God. --1 Corinthians 6:9-10. C. Evil #3: A depraved mind can be traced back to man’s ignoring of God’s many fingerprints in creation, and then rebelliously worshipping created things, rather than worshipping man’s creator, God. Concluding Plea: Turn to Christ while you still can, for without Christ the case against you is iron clad. It’s open and shut.
