Introduction:

In many ways it isn’t a joyful time right now. Coronavirus and all it’s implications. The outrage over racial problems that has spilled over to threats to our society. And the continual political bickering of our politicians.
Is it bothering you? It’s bothering me. What’s the antidote? Joy. Joy is a feeling of great happiness or pleasure.
Bottom Line: The Lord’s joy has the power to get us through hard times.

There is a natural joy that is found in the world.

People in the world are at times genuinely happy. Sometime for good reasons but sometimes for the wrong reasons.
Mark 14:11 NIV
11 They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand him over.
People have joy when thing go their way.
Luke 23:8 NIV
8 When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see him. From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform a sign of some sort.
People have joy when something good happens to them.
John 16:20 NIV
20 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.
People can have joy when evil happens, in this case, when Jesus was crucified.

There is a supernatural joy that is found in Jesus.

The Lord’s joy is different from the world’s joy.

It is independent of circumstances.

2 Corinthians 13:9 NIV
9 We are glad whenever we are weak but you are strong; and our prayer is that you may be fully restored.
Colossians 1:24 NIV

2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds,

It is associated with hope.

Romans 15:13 NIV
13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

It is inexpressible and full of glory.

1 Peter 1:8 NIV
8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy,

The Lord’s joy is powerful.

It can give us strength.

Nehemiah 8:10 NIV
10 Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

It can enable us to endure hardship.

John 16:21 NIV
21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world.

It can prompt us to do things.

Matthew 13:44 NIV
44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.
Hebrews 12:2 NIV
2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

The Lord’s joy can be your joy

It comes from the Spirit of God.

Galatians 5:22 NIV
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

It is based upon our understanding of God.

1 Peter 1:3–9 NIV
3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, 5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7 These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9 for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

It is something we choose.

Philippians 3:1 NIV
1 Further, my brothers and sisters, rejoice in the Lord! It is no trouble for me to write the same things to you again, and it is a safeguard for you.
This is a command.
Philippians 4:4 NIV
4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!
This is a command.
1 Thessalonians 5:16 NIV
16 Rejoice always,
This is a command.
