Meditation Sermon 6/14/2020 Title: "The DeVine Connection" Text: >John 15:1-8 (NIV) "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5 "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. >Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Trans: The Spiritual Discipline of Meditation is one of the most powerful ways we can stay connected to God...If there is a good connection there will be good fruit...How many of you know you can hear and not really be hearing? When you are listening, you are connecting... 1. Separation A. Separation from Jesus -Jesus was preparing His disciples for His return to the Father in Heaven... -In John 14 Jesus is trying to comfort His disciples who are beginning to experience Separation Anxiety... -Jesus promises them counseling sessions to deal with their anxiety...The Holy Spirit will help you... -Jesus tells them not to worry, that He is preparing a place for them to come be with Him... -Then in John 15 He gives them the cure for their case of Separation Anxiety...in a parable...Meditation... -We were created to be connected with God through a thing called RELATIONSHIP... -The words "abide," and "remain" are rich with the concept of MEDITATION... Ill: During the last few months we have tried to stay connected...ZOOM... - B. Separation from God -Our world today is experiencing the symptoms of being separated from God... -Fear and Anxiety are blowing through our society like a bull in a china closet... -Both fear and anxiety will eventually cause people to lose touch with reality... -When we start to think we don't need God...in our families, in our schools, in our government... we start to lose touch with the truth... Ill: Spanking will ruin their precious minds...That is not the truth!!! >Proverbs 13:24 God's Word says: "Spare the rod, spoil the child..." -These things are going to happen from now on...We are living in the last days... -Fear and hatred will dominate our society... >John 16:33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." -You can have PEACE if you make a connection with the truth...the truth will set you free... - 2. Connection A. The Branches are connected to the Vine -Here is one of the greatest illustrations in the Bible... -illustrations help us to connect with the truth that is being taught... -They could relate to this cultural illustration...it was "crystal clear" to them... -There were vineyards all around them...Their water was worse than the water in Piedmont... -They didn't have water purifiers...Filters... -They all knew how absurd it was to think that a branch could produce fruit separated from the vine... -How utterly ridiculous! This is not Brain Surgery... -Jesus used common knowledge to make His point...Everyone know the branch has to be connected to the vine in order to produce fruit... -Everyone knows the branch can't be just barely hanging on the vine...it will never produce fruit that way... -Disconnected...Barely connected...equal NO FRUIT!!!! B. The Working out of your Salvation >Philippians 2:12 "...continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling..." -For followers of Christ the working out of our Salvation comes as we daily work to stay connected to God... -We don't need to work at producing fruit!!!! That is the supernatural part... -God does that...TRANSFORMATION... -We need to work at staying connected... -The 12 Spiritual Disciplines are a way of staying connected to the GOD...THE TRUE VINE... -When we work at practicing the Spiritual Disciplines, we are working at REMAINING IN HIM...AND ABIDING in HIM...Meditation... -Fighting off the distractions that disconnect us from our relationship with God... -Rejecting the lifestyle of this world that is too busy for a relationship with our Heavenly Father... -Focusing our minds on the truth... -Fighting the good fight...against the devil's distractions... -Being disciplined to do what we know we need to go whether we FEEL like it or not... 3. Production A. Guaranteed JOY -A close connection...relationship with God will produce JOY in your life... -This kind of joy can't come from the World...because the world and everything in it is temporary... -True Disciples...Followers of Christ...produce fruit because they daily stay in contact with the VINE... >John 15:9-11 "As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. (FULL) B. Guaranteed LOVE -You life will produce unconditional love... -It is the kind of love that only comes from being connected to the True Vine... -Our world needs to see this kind of love produced in our lives... Issue: Connection: If you are connected you will experience a supernatural production of the Fruit of the Spirit. Disconnected: If you are disconnected you will experience dead, dried up religion that kills...Frustration will nag at you until your spiritual life dries up and dies... 2
