Bill & Ted Face the Music
Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (2/16/89)
The overuse of the word “Radical.”
Radix = Root (Radish)
A fundamental alteration. It changes everything about you.

The Remnant will Take Root & Bear Fruit

Isaiah 37:31 ESV
And the surviving remnant of the house of Judah shall again take root downward and bear fruit upward.
Remnant – Those that stay faithful.
2020 has been a trying year. Two major problems: Media and Social Media.
Facebook just makes me cry sometimes.
Believers that I have met or that I know post pictures that should embarrass them. I’m embarrassed for them.
And you just know that they are not living their lives for Jesus. Not a part of the faithful remnant.
But, those that stay faithful – the remnant. They will take root downward and bear fruit upward!
Define Fruit:
Galatians 5:22–23 ESV
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Evangelistic fruit as well.

Why the Root Matters

Because the root is the conduit for nutrition.
Why people fertilize their lawns
When I was younger, I was always confused as to why people painted their lawns green.
We spend millions of dollars each year to make us mow our yards more often?
What you put your root into will affect the fruit you produce.
Deuteronomy 29:18 ESV
Beware lest there be among you a man or woman or clan or tribe whose heart is turning away today from the Lord our God to go and serve the gods of those nations. Beware lest there be among you a root bearing poisonous and bitter fruit,
Idolatry = Allowing anything else to receive your worship.
Used to think, steal your worship, but we give it away.
If you put your root into poison, you will produce corrupt fruit.
Do you know people like that? They thrive on drama, or unrighteousness.
Living empty lives.
Hosea 9:16 ESV
Ephraim is stricken; their root is dried up; they shall bear no fruit. Even though they give birth, I will put their beloved children to death.
Job 18:16 ESV
His roots dry up beneath, and his branches wither above.
There is a Direct Relationship between Your Root and Your Fruit
News - thrives on ratings. It’s TV. Sensational and Abnormal. Then we need more extreme events to hold our attention and viewership.
Leads to a skewed view of reality.
What Jesus says about it.
John 15:1-8, “ “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.”

1. Jesus wants you to bear fruit of righteousness. (v. 2)

You plant a garden in hopes of seeing produce.
But, also, for us - a life of meaning is fulfilling.
Empty is empty.

2. You can’t bear fruit on your own. (vv. 4-5)

We all want to change the world.
Purpose of prayer gathering. Calling out to Jesus for healing.
We are incapable to bring about substantial change.
We need the Spirit to empower us.

3. God is glorified by our fruit. (v. 8a)

Not about us, not about people looking to see how pretty our fruit is.
If the attention stops at us, then we have failed!
Specifically, our lives need to glorify God by our actions.

4. The world is pointed to God by our fruit (v. 8b)

Specifically, when people see how the church lives a different life, it should draw them to Jesus.
Matthew 5:16 ESV
In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
When someone who claims to be a follower of Christ lives contrary to the Spirit, it actually drives people further away from Jesus. In no way is this helpful.

Conclusion

If you want to live a fulfilled life, it comes through a right relationship with Jesus.
Meaning. Purpose. You don’t have to search for it.
Abide in Jesus:
A Continued Connection
A Radical, Fundamental Alteration.
