The Promise of Power

Last week we began look at book of Acts
The birth of the Church
Understand - God’s mission did not change - the vehicle of change did
We are in a state of rebirth again -things will be different - the message remains
More than ever we need the power to bring change
Acts 1:8 CSB
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
How to become Spirit filled
Acts 2:37 CSB
When they heard this, they were pierced to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles: “Brothers, what should we do?”
How to become Spirit filled
Have you ever been asked - “How do I get what you have?’
Peter gave them the answer - and for us today
How to become Spirit filled
Repent of sin
Inward recognition and change
Acts: An Introduction and Commentary f. Peter Preaches the Gospel (2:14–42)

Calvin insisted that ‘repentance not only always follows faith, but is produced by it’

Acts 2:38 CSB
Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
How to become Spirit filled

How to become Spirit filled
3. Receive the gift by faith
Our salvation is gift
Not anything we do or deserve
At the point of conversion you and I receive all the Holy Spirit we will ever get
We are sealed and filled
The results of being Spirit filled
There should be a difference, a change
2 Corinthians 5:17 CSB
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come!
The results of being Spirit filled
Your faith becomes contagious
Acts 2:41 CSB
So those who accepted his message were baptized, and that day about three thousand people were added to them.
It is no different today
That same outcome and possibility is here today
The results of being Spirit filled
2. Your love for the church becomes apparent
Acts 2:42 CSB
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.
Devotion to growing in faith
Devoted to growing community and fellowship
Koinnonia - communion, partnership
Devoted to praying - be ing an active part
We have made membership - like a club
We belong with and for each other
BE classes in July
The results of being Spirit filled
3. Your ministry becomes more powerful
Acts 2:43 CSB
Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and signs were being performed through the apostles.
These are normal things
Things only God can credit for
The results of being Spirit filled
4. Your generosity become radical
Acts 2:44 CSB
Now all the believers were together and held all things in common.
This is not socialism - this is faith in action
Needs were seen - needs were met
James 2:15–17 CSB
If a brother or sister is without clothes and lacks daily food and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, stay warm, and be well fed,” but you don’t give them what the body needs, what good is it? In the same way faith, if it doesn’t have works, is dead by itself.

The Promise of Power

God is and can move today as he did
What the Church needs to-day is not more machinery or better, not new organizations or more and novel methods, but men whom the Holy Ghost can use — men of prayer, men mighty in prayer. The Holy Ghost does not flow through methods, but through men. He does not come on machinery, but on men. He does not anoint plans, but men, men of prayer.”- E. M. Bounds
