Introduction

The last few weeks have been filled with devastating news — stories about the police killing black people. At this point, these calamities feel familiar — so familiar, in fact, that their details have begun to echo each other.
In July 2014, a cell phone video captured some of Eric Garner's final words as New York City police officers sat on his head and pinned him to the ground on a city sidewalk: "I can't breathe." On May 25 of this year, the same words were spoken by George Floyd, who pleaded for release as an officer knelt on his neck and pinned him to the ground on a Minneapolis city street.
Not only that, Were still in a worldwide pandemic where People of Color because of their lack of resources disproportionately due to racism have suffered the most in this epidemic....

Research Shows Entire Black Communities Suffer Trauma After Police Shootings

Police killings of unarmed African Americans have created a mental health crisis of enormous proportions.
BY TASHA WILLIAMS AUG 3, 2018 (YES! online magazine)
“A recent study sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania—released just before the anniversaries of the deaths of Eric Garner (2014), Michael Brown (2014), John Crawford (2014), and Philando Castile (2016)—found that there could be millions like Eva, for whom these killings have been a mental health trigger. Research included data from the Mapping Police Violence Project database for police killings between 2013 and 2016 and information from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System of over 103,000 Black Americans. The results indicate that police killings of unarmed Black Americans are having a population-level impact on the mental health of Black Americans.

Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary (Eleventh Edition) Overwhelm

over•whelm \ˌō-vər-ˈhwelm, -ˈwelm\ verb transitive

[Middle English, from 1over + whelmen to turn over, cover up] 14th century

1: UPSET, OVERTHROW

2 a: to cover over completely: SUBMERGE

b: to overcome by superior force or numbers

c: to overpower in thought or feeling

Ecclesiastes 5:8 KJV 1900
8 If thou seest the oppression of the poor, and violent perverting of judgment and justice in a province, marvel not at the matter: for he that is higher than the highest regardeth; and there be higher than they.
The Message: The Bible in Contemporary Language Chapter 5

Don’t be too upset when you see the poor kicked around, and justice and right violated all over the place. Exploitation filters down from one petty official to another. There’s no end to it, and nothing can be done about it.

Many people in this country feel kicked around by the tentacles of racism. Whether you try to purchase a home, a car, or whatever, you will experience it and it will have a mental impact on you on some way fashion or form.
David though a King knew how it felt to be over whelmed......Whether he was on the run from Saul, or Absolom, like many of us we can draw strength from the Holy Spirit when you are overwhelmed by the pressures of life......
Like David in verse 1-2 There are times when we feel that God is so far away from our situations......It is when we are at our weakest point, when we are vulnerable, we need to call on God and ask Him to Hear us
to hear (auditory) v. — to perceive sound or have the power to perceive sound through the auditory sense.
A. Overwhelmed by Prayer Psalm 61:1, 2
This psalm begins with earnest prayer by the psalmist
1. The Plea in the Prayer (Psalm 61:1) "Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer" (Psalm 61:1).
The opening lines of the prayer express three important characteristics of successful prayer.
The seriousness of the prayer.
"Cry." If there is any doubt about the serious nature of the prayer, the word translated "cry" ends the doubt, for it means a "shrill, piercing cry" (Rawlinson). The psalmist needs help immediately. The Sovereign for the prayer. "O God." This is the place to go in prayer. Going to any other source is vain, for only God can give us the help we need.
The sagacity of the prayer. "Attend unto my prayer." In time of trouble, the wisest thing to do is pray. We may be able to do other things to alleviate our trouble, but we must pray. We can always pray even when we can do nothing else. Analytical Bible Expositor - Psalms.
Definition of Overwhelmed
a: to cover over completely: SUBMERGE
b: to overcome by superior force or numbers
c: to overpower in thought or feeling
God sees this mess down here and has already written about it...
Deuteronomy 31:26 KJV 1900
26 Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee.
God word and His presence is a witness against us......
The Lord Has not overlooked nothing......
turn a blind eye/deaf ear, to. To overlook something deliberately. One of these expressions appears to have a specific historic origin.
Isaiah 26:3 KJV 1900
3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on thee: Because he trusteth in thee.
We need to pray more when we are overwhelmed
The Complete Works of E. M. Bounds .
When we pray, “Give us this day our daily bread,” we are, in a measure, shutting tomorrow out of our prayer. We do not live in tomorrow but in today. We do not seek tomorrow’s grace or tomorrow’s bread. They thrive best, and get most out of life, who live in the living present. They pray best who pray for today’s needs, not for tomorrow’s, which may render our prayers unnecessary and redundant by not existing at all!
True prayers are born of present trials and present needs. Bread, for today, is bread enough. Bread given for today is the strongest sort of pledge that there will be bread tomorrow. Victory today, is the assurance of victory tomorrow. Our prayers need to be focused upon the present, We must trust God today, and leave the morrow entirely with Him. The present is ours; the future belongs to God. Prayer is the task and duty of each recurring day—daily prayer for daily needs.
Tony Evans says:
Overwhelmed, David prays for divine security. Though David is without strength, his God is a rock . . . high above (61:2). David recognized both his own limitations and God’s unconquerable might
God can Hear us no mater where we are because in the presence of God there is fullness of Joy.........Were full of other things because were not in His presence....Were full of anger ( rightfully so) but we don’t need to tear down the city, but go to the Rock.....let our prayers bombard heaven....were full of CNN, ABC, CBS, MSNBC, but were not full with prayer.....many of you have given up on God......but the Lord has not given up on those who trust inHIM!
Point 2 - Overwhelming Persuaded 3-7
Make no mistake, protesting is not bad when done lawfully......it points out injustices and calls for change goes out…but
There are others who have no respect for Government at all . They are persuaded to tear down this country and feed off the seedbed of racism. They are the out of towners that burn up your cities, and fuel racial rhetoric throughout the internet. They can be Russian, or any body who is commited or persuaded by Anarchy......
Anarchy is the state of a society being freely constituted without authorities or a governing body. It may also refer to a society or group of people that totally rejects a set hierarchy. The word anarchy was first used in 1539, meaning "an absence of government".
a state of disorder due to absence or nonrecognition of authority.
Their fingerprint is showing up when the news call them out of towners......They don’t care about the injustice toward people of color.....they taking away from it.....This is the DEVIL work of burning our cities and they are persuaded to tear down government because God created Government. We must be persuaded ....Commit yourselves to the Lord.....What has the Lord Heard from you through this? Does he see your commitment to HIM? Are you overwhelmingly persuaded?
One definition of Persuaded
Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary (Eleventh Edition) Persuasion

a: an opinion held with complete assurance

Is the evidence clear in your life........are you persuaded in times of trouble ? Are you in a place of reliance on the Lord? What are you attached to during this time of crisis?
Dictionary of Biblical Languages with Semantic Domains: Hebrew (Old Testament) 5624 נֵדֶר

Deuteronomy 6:13 KJV 1900

Deuteronomy 27:10 KJV 1900

When you are overwhelming persuaded and committed to God....
you have and inheritance v5,
add days to your life forever v6-7a
Psalm 61:7 KJV 1900
7 He shall abide before God for ever: O prepare mercy and truth, which may preserve him.
To prepare means to appoint. To appoint is a mathematical term like taking a census…When you Overwhelmingly persuaded , God’s mercy, loyal love, covenant love , will preserve you....He will place you in the secret place out of sight, below ground....God will take care of you....He will Hide you
Psalm 27:5 KJV 1900
5 For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: In the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; He shall set me up upon a rock.
Psalm 50:15 KJV 1900
15 And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.
PT 3- OVERWHELMED BY Praise( of the Psalmist) Psalm 61:8
The psalm, like many of the psalms goes from problems to praise. Problems begin the psalm but praise ends the psalm. This is what happens when faith leads the way.
1. The Carol in the Praise (Psalm 61:8) "So will I sing praise unto thy name" (Psalm 61:8). The praise in this case will be given by singing. Some of the greatest praises are those which are sung to the honor of God. This does not include CCM (Contemporary Christian Music) renditions.
2. The Commitment to the Praise (Psalm 61:8) "Forever" (Psalm 61:8). Again we have the commitment to God as eternal. Our dedication to the Lord must be more than just a few days, or months, or years. It must be forever, for God is committed to protecting our soul forever.
3. The Conduct in the Praise (Psalm 61:8) "That I may daily perform my vows" (Psalm 61:8). If we want to conduct ourselves as God's people, we will have to be committed to God "forever" (Psalm 61:8). The key to a daily performance of godliness is a permanent commitment to God. Analytical Bible Expositor - Psalms.
.The path to this dream, Dr. King said, must be through non-violence:
Again and again we must rise to the majestic heights -- of meeting physical force with soul forceT
