INTRODUCTION
Funny Job descriptions…Your last job may have had a fun job description but here is the reality for all Christians Jesus has also given us a job description. Jesus job description is very simple– Follow Me.Follow me, wherever I go you go, whenever I say jump you say: How high!!!!As you follow me you will lead others to follow me as well and they will lead others… That’s called discipleship. Here is the reality though:many times we have turn Jesus’s job description of following Him into something completely different.
Follow me becomes
try me
accept me
believe in me
associate yourself with my name.
When we do that we lose what Jesus has called us to do.
You hear people say this all the time…I don’t feel Jesus presence anymoreI don’t feel like he is near anymoreI don’t feel like he is close to me anymore
When you hear that there is always the possibility that Jesus said: Let’s go do this now, let’s move this direction but you however stay stagnant. Complacent.
Jesus is a God on the move. What does it mean to fulfill the great commission and make disciples?
It means focusing less on being great students and more in being great practitioners. Many people in the church can quote the great commission, they can even explain it but they have never dreamed of actually putting into practice.Let’s read the text.
BIBLE VERSE
Mark 3:7–21 CSB
7 Jesus departed with his disciples to the sea, and a large crowd followed from Galilee, and a large crowd followed from Judea, 8 Jerusalem, Idumea, beyond the Jordan, and around Tyre and Sidon. The large crowd came to him because they heard about everything he was doing. 9 Then he told his disciples to have a small boat ready for him, so that the crowd wouldn’t crush him. 10 Since he had healed many, all who had diseases were pressing toward him to touch him. 11 Whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God!” 12 And he would strongly warn them not to make him known. 13 Jesus went up the mountain and summoned those he wanted, and they came to him. 14 He appointed twelve, whom he also named apostles, to be with him, to send them out to preach, 15 and to have authority to drive out demons. 16 He appointed the Twelve: To Simon, he gave the name Peter; 17 and to James the son of Zebedee, and to his brother John, he gave the name “Boanerges” (that is, “Sons of Thunder”); 18 Andrew; Philip and Bartholomew; Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot, 19 and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him. 20 Jesus entered a house, and the crowd gathered again so that they were not even able to eat. 21 When his family heard this, they set out to restrain him, because they said, “He’s out of his mind.”

1. Job Responsibilities

Mark 3:7–13 CSB
Crowds from everywhere, different peopledifferent racesdifferent beliefssame Jesus
The came because they heard of the healingThey came because they needed something
So many people that Jesus needed to get on a boat sometimes to preach so that would be room and people would hear him.Everyone wanted something from Jesus.
Jesus wanted to retreat and spend some time with a few.
ILLUSTRATION
Ministry needs in this life will never let up or slow down.
There will always be something else that needs done.the more you do the more needs you seeJesus here is trying to leave the crowds I don’t believe that in his heart he is saddened by everything that didn’t get done.
It’s easy to read so far and think of how man people didn’t get healed because he was moving into something else
we need to celebrate more what did get doneMore people follow Jesus to benefit from His ministry than to contribute to His ministry.
The large crowd came to him because they heard about everything he was doing.
10Since he had healed many, all who had diseases were pressing toward him to touch him.
come to church I’ll take you to lunch
come to church I’ll do this for you
The reason I came to church was to date a pretty girl. Came to church with an eye to what I could get out off it.Jesus came to be a giver, not a taker. Following Him means change our mentality. from What is in it for me? to How can I serve you?
APPLICATION
Verse 13 we see that Jesus summons some people.
Mark 3:13 CSB
13 Jesus went up the mountain and summoned those he wanted, and they came to him.
Here is the fun part.
Remember the job descriptions we read? Why would people put an ad for a job position? They are overwhelmed! They need help! Too much for one person! However, this is not Jesus’ position.
From the beginning of Jesus ministry until now with everything that came to Jesus face not once has he complained.
Not once the needs of the people seemed to overwhelm for Him
Not once we see him puzzled as to how is he going to get everything done
So, Why does he summoned people to come alongside Him?
Jesus is multiplying himself and therefore making people not solely dependent on Him.
He knew he would not be on earth forever.
Before we move on to the requirements let me ask you some questions.
How many of you would love to see great personal growth in your faith?
How many of you would like to see great life transformation? How many would love to see this church grow tremendously?
How many would love to see many more people come and be disciples?
How many of you would love to see many kids come and be taught the Bible?
How many of you would like all of that without affecting any of your likes, dislikes, and personal preferences? Many of us want to follow Jesus but now live as he lived. We want all the perks none of the responsibilities.
One aspect of following Jesus is to live as he lived.
Jesus gave
Jesus loved
Jesus forgave

2. Essential Requirements

Mark 3:13–14 CSB
13 Jesus went up the mountain and summoned those he wanted, and they came to him. 14 He appointed twelve, whom he also named apostles, to be with him, to send them out to preach,
Disciple- StudentApostle- Someone, or something, sent. Derived from the verb “to send out”. In the New Testament, usually refers to someone sent as an authorized agent by Jesus or the Christian community
Mark 3:15–19 CSB
15 and to have authority to drive out demons.
Pursuit – “summoned those he wanted”
Mark 3:14 CSB
14 He appointed twelve, whom he also named apostles, to be with him, to send them out to preach,
The most humbling aspect of Kingdom work is found in the fact that Jesus doesn’t need us but that He wants us.
Jesus pursues us. None of the disciples came to him with an extensive resume telling Jesus how good they were that Jesus was like I cannot do what I need to do without him. Jesus does not need you to accomplish His will. He is sovereign, He wants you to be the means by which He accomplishes it though.
Esther 4:14 CSB
14 If you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance will come to the Jewish people from another place, but you and your father’s family will be destroyed. Who knows, perhaps you have come to your royal position for such a time as this.”
Who knows, perhaps you have come to your royal position for such a time as this.Perhaps God has put you in here today for such a time as this. However, if you are not willing to follow Him he will accomplish it another way.
Jesus summed 12, he pursuit 12. 1000s of years later we name our kids after 11 of those 12. The 12 that chose to accept that challenge and follow him.
Presence – “Be with Him”
Mark 3:14 CSB
14 He appointed twelve, whom he also named apostles, to be with him, to send them out to preach,
Don’t attempt things for Jesus before you have spent time with Jesus.
Don’t get so busy doing that you have no time experiencing him.
THE GREATEST GIFT YOU CAN GIVE THIS WORLD IS YOUR INTIMACY WITH GOD.
Purpose – “Send them out to preach”
Mark 3:14 CSB
14 He appointed twelve, whom he also named apostles, to be with him, to send them out to preach,
To share what Jesus has taught you. You are not called to be eloquent or well spoken or to know everything but to share what he taught you.
“Jesus, Willard says, “does not call us to do what he did, but to be as he was, permeated with love. Then the doing of what he did and said becomes the natural expression of who we are in him.”
Power – “Have authority to cast out demons”
Mark 3:15 CSB
15 and to have authority to drive out demons.
the disciples where given this powerMinistry is pushing back Satan’s dominion and ushering in God’s Kingdom.
When he calls you to serve Him, when He calls you to do something for Him, When he calls you to do something scary he will give you the power to acomplish as well.
“Put his words into practice and find them to be true.”― Dallas Willard
ILLUSTRATION
Illustrate your point.
APPLICATION
before we finish
The religious elite would have disapproved regarding the caliber of Jesus’ disciples.
They were not Elite. God may put something in your hear that makes you think you are not worthy, you are not capable, People around may even say that to you.
Practice the for 4 job descriptions
Know that you were pursued by Him
Be in His presence first
Live on purpose
trust in his power.
Look with me at 20-21 really fast:
Mark 3:20–21 CSB
20 Jesus entered a house, and the crowd gathered again so that they were not even able to eat. 21 When his family heard this, they set out to restrain him, because they said, “He’s out of his mind.”
His family was ok with Him healing a few people, they were ok with Him being a little unorthodox.
When He was about to take that “show on the road”.
When He told them this is much bigger than just this town, it’s much bigger than this group of people.the people closest to you might be the ones that will get in the way of you following God.
Since you cannot please everyone, seek to find your approval in the eyes of God.
CONCLUSION
When it comes to the mission of following Jesus it can be overwhelming.
It can feel like there is always more to doThat you are failing
that you cannot please those around you
Focus on the 4 job descriptions of following Jesus
Know that you were pursued by Him
Be in His presence first
Live on purpose
trust in his power.
