that  eternal            life which was with the   Father and was manifested to us — \\ τὴν ζωὴν τὴν αἰώνιον, ἥτις ἦν πρὸς τὸν πατέρα, καὶ ἐφανερώθη ἡμῖν)· \\ \\
that which we have seen and heard we declare  to  you, that you also may have fellowship
3 ὃ ἑωράκαμεν καὶ ἀκηκόαμεν, ἀπαγγέλλομεν ὑμῖν, ἵνα καὶ ὑμεῖς κοινωνίαν ἔχητε
with   us;    and truly our fellowship  is   with    the      Father   and with         His   Son
μεθ ̓ ἡμῶν· καὶ ἡ κοινωνία δὲ ἡ ἡμετέρα μετὰ τοῦ πατρὸς καὶ μετὰ τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ
  Jesus    Christ.
Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ· \\ \\
  And these things we write to you that your  joy may  be full.
4 καὶ ταῦτα γράφομεν ὑμῖν, ἵνα ἡ χαρὰ ὑμῶν ᾖ πεπληρωμένη.

   This    is       the     message which we have heard from Him and declare  to  you,  that
5 Καὶ ἔστιν αὕτη ἡ ἀγγελία ἣν ἀκηκόαμεν ἀπ ̓ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀναγγέλλομεν ὑμῖν, ὅτι ὁ
 God    is    light and    in     Him I s     no darkness  at  all.
\\ Θεὸς φῶς ἐστι, καὶ σκοτία ἐν αὐτῷ οὐκ ἔστιν οὐδεμία.
\\ \\
    If      we say that we have  fellowship with  Him,   and    walk     in         darkness,
6 ἐὰν εἴπωμεν ὅτι κοινωνίαν ἔχομεν μετ ̓ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐν τῷ σκότει περιπατῶμεν,
    we lie       and do not practice the   truth.
ψευδόμεθα, καὶ οὐ ποιοῦμεν τὴν ἀλήθειαν· \\ \\
   But  if  we walk in     the      light     as     He       is     in the light, we have  fellowship with 
7 ἐὰν δὲ ἐν τῷ φωτὶ περιπατῶμεν, ὡς αὐτός ἐστιν ἐν τῷ φωτί, κοινωνίαν ἔχομεν μετ ̓
one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ     His     Son    cleanses     us    from  all
ἀλλήλων, καὶ τὸ αἷμα Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ καθαρίζει ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ πάσης
       sin.
If      we say that     we  have no      sin,     we deceive ourselves, and the truth
ἁμαρτίας.
8 ἐὰν εἴπωμεν ὅτι ἁμαρτίαν οὐκ ἔχομεν, ἑαυτοὺς πλανῶμεν, καὶ ἡ ἀλήθεια
  is     not    in  us.
οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν ἡμῖν.

     If     we confess                our        sins,    He        is  faithful and just to forgive us our
9 ἐὰν ὁμολογῶμεν τὰς ἁμαρτίας ἡμῶν, πιστός ἐστι καὶ δίκαιος ἵνα ἀφῇ ἡμῖν τὰς
    sins         and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
ἁμαρτίας, καὶ καθαρίσῃ ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ πάσης ἀδικίας.

       If     we say  that we  have not sinned, we make    Him       a liar,  and     His   word
10 ἐὰν εἴπωμεν ὅτι οὐχ ἡμαρτήκαμεν, ψεύστην ποιοῦμεν αὐτὸν, καὶ ὁ λόγος αὐτοῦ
  is     not    in    us.
\\ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν ἡμῖν.
My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin.
And if anyone sins,
1 Τεκνία μου, ταῦτα γράφω ὑμῖν, ἵνα μὴ ἁμάρτητε.
καὶ ἐάν τις ἁμάρτῃ, παράκλητον
we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
\\ ἔχομεν πρὸς τὸν πατέρα, Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν δίκαιον·
\\  And   He      Himself     is  the propitiation for our sins, and   not       for     ours      only
2 καὶ αὐτὸς ἱλασμός ἐστι περὶ τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν ἡμῶν· οὐ περὶ τῶν ἡμετέρων δὲ μόνον,
 but    also for  the  whole world.
ἀλλὰ καὶ περὶ ὅλου τοῦ κόσμου.
Now by  this       we know    that   we know      Him,   if   we  keep    His commandments.
\\ 3 Καὶ ἐν τούτῳ γινώσκομεν ὅτι ἐγνώκαμεν αὐτόν, ἐὰν τὰς ἐντολὰς αὐτοῦ τηρῶμεν.

He who says, I know Him, and does not keep His commandments,  is  a     liar,    and    the
4 ὁ λέγων Έ̓γνωκα αὐτόν, καὶ τὰς ἐντολὰς αὐτοῦ μὴ τηρῶν, ψεύστης ἐστί, καὶ ἐν τούτῳ
    truth is not in him.
\\ ἡ ἀλήθεια οὐκ ἔστιν· \\  
 But   whoever   keeps   His   word,   truly   the  love  of   God   is     perfected  in   him.

5 ὃς δ ̓ ἂν τηρῇ αὐτοῦ τὸν λόγον, ἀληθῶς ἐν τούτῳ ἡ ἀγάπη τοῦ Θεοῦ τετελείωται.

  this      we know    that we are in  Him.
τούτῳ γινώσκομεν ὅτι ἐν αὐτῷ ἐσμεν·
 
 He  who  says  he  abides  in  Him  ought  himself    also      to walk    just  as  He
6 ὁ λέγων ἐν αὐτῷ μένειν ὀφείλει, καθὼς ἐκεῖνος περιεπάτησε, καὶ αὐτὸς οὕτω
