HOOK

We learned a couple of principles yesterday here at The Message
JESUS IS THE BEGINNING AND THE END
I WILL REMAIN OBEDIENT TO HIS WORD
As we start Chapter 9 today we see another miracle that Jesus did— this time a man blind since birth
There is a total of 6 miracles of Jesus that are unique in the gospel of John— not recorded in other synoptic gospels
Water turned into wine [John 1:1-11]
The healing of the official’s son [John 4:46-52]
The healing of the paralyzed man in the pool Bethesda [John 5:1-13]
And the one that we are about to study— healing of a man born blind [John 9:1-12]
Later on in John 11:38-44 we will see another miracle— Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead
And towards the last chapter 21— The miraculous catch of fish— the first miracle of the glorified Jesus [John 21:1-14]

BOOK

John 9:1–12 NIV
1 As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3 “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4 As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. 5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” 6 After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. 7 “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing. 8 His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?” 9 Some claimed that he was. Others said, “No, he only looks like him.” But he himself insisted, “I am the man.” 10 “How then were your eyes opened?” they asked. 11 He replied, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.” 12 “Where is this man?” they asked him. “I don’t know,” he said.
Why do people get sick?
There could a number of reasons why..
Self inflicted— because of own sin
Satan caused it— Job got sick because of Satan
As a form of punishment—
To accomplish God’s purpose— God sent plagues to Egypt
And from this passage we saw that God simply allows it so that His woks may be displayed— and glorified

LOOK

RABBI, WHO SINNED, THIS MAN OR HIS PARENTS THAT HE WAS BORN BLIND?
They were curious about the reason behind illness and impairment
NEITHER THIS MAN OR HIS PARENTS SINNED
Here we see that impairment is not necessarily because it was self-inflicted [sin], nor Satan caused it, nor punishment— but simply because God wants to display His glory

TOOK

GOD ALLOWS SICKNESS SO THAT HIS WORKS MIGHT BE DISPLAYED
JESUS IS MY GREAT HEALER
