HOOK

Yesterday here at The Message we learned from the Lord that:
BELONGING TO GOD IS NOT DETERMINED BY BLOODLINE
CHILDREN OF GOD HEARS AND DO WHAT HE SAYS
Yesterday , Jesus concluded by saying
John 8:47 NIV
47 Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”
Let’s see how the Jews who initially believed in Him. had responded to this
If you go back to verse 31, you’ll see that these Jews believed in Jesus but they had a hard time accepting his claims
One of the most difficult claim of Jesus that they had difficulty believing is when Jesus claimed that whoever obeys His Word— will never see death
Let’s see how they responded to Jesus’s claims that belonging to God is not determined by their bloodline
Open your Bible to John 8:48:59— once you got there type Amen!— This will bring us to the completion of 8
13 more chapters and we will be done with the book of John
CHARACTER, COMMAND, PROMISES, CONVICTIONS, EXAMPLES, CHALLENGES AND ENCOURAGEMENT

BOOK

John 8:48–59 NIV
48 The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?” 49 “I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. 50 I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.” 52 At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?” 54 Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. 55 Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.” 57 “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!” 58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.

LOOK

WHOEVER OBEYS MY WORD WILL NEVER SEE DEATH
This is what the Jews had a hard time accepting— because their thoughts is centered on “physical death”, while Jesus is talking about “spiritual” death
ABRAHAM DIED SO DID THE PROPHETS
They took the Lord’s Word that made them struggle to believe what Jesus claimed that whoever obeys his words will not die
YOU ARE NOT YET FIFTY YEARS OLD
50 years old was the ancient retirement age [NUMBERS 4:3]
They insinuated that Jesus was too young to have lived during the time Abraham which was about 2,000 years prior
BEFORE ABRAHAM WAS BORN, I AM
Jesus claim combines both His preexistence and divinity [the quality of being divine]
In John 1:1 says, “in the beginning was the Word”— the Word that became flesh is Jesus
To understand this claim of the Lord we have to read JOHN 1:1, GENESIS 1:1-2 and confirmation from COLOSSIANS 1:16
Our take away today is more on the character of God [Jesus]
The promise that we can find from this passage is the promise of eternal life
The command is to “obey his word”
Example to avoid is “to take literally everything that Jesus said”
The challenge of this passage is to remain obedient to His word
And the encouragement is that we have eternal life in Jesus

TOOK

JESUS IS THE BEGINNING AND THE END
I WILL REMAIN OBEDIENT TO HIS WORD
