Hello and welcome to another episode, our 197th episode, of Kids Bible Minute. I’m your host Landon Rowell and the preacher for the church of Christ in Ramona, OK. Thank you for deciding to study God’s Word with me this blessed day and I want to encourage you to have your Bible with you so that when I mention a Bible verse you can pause this podcast and read that passage for yourself. I want you to see God’s Word and not just take my word for it. Now after you have read that passage unpause the podcast, and then if I read the verse out loud read along with me. If you are new to our study, first I want to say thank you for studying with us and secondly I want to let you know that you can reach all archived or past episodes easily at ramonacofc.com in the podcast section where there is a direct link to Kids Bible Minute past episodes. Now as you all know we have been studying through the book of Revelation and have, up to this point, covered the introduction and first nine chapters which means we are now on the tenth chapter. Revelation 10-11:14 is much like chapter seven in that we find an “interlude,” if you will, or a break from the timeline of events. If you remember back, chapter seven was all about answer the question “what will happen to the church during these troubling times,” with the answer being God will take care of the church His people. Now we have another break in events but this time, instead of comfort, action is under consideration. In other words these verses are answering the question “what should the church do during these troubling times.” The answer is study and preach the word. With that in mind let’s examine some key factors from this chapter. John sees “another” mighty or strong angel. Many have tried to say this is Christ because of the similarities in symbolism between the two in this book, however John likens this angel to that which he saw in Revelation 5:2 which we know for sure was not Christ. What we do know is this angel is different than typical angelic beings that are powerful or mighty (Psalm 103:20) other wise there is no need for such description. The reality is there are many spiritual being groups, if you will, and within each group there seems to be a hierarchy i.e. “archangel in the angelic beings” or “Satan in the demonic beings.” The significant thing about this angel is that he is symbolically “spanning the globe” with one foot on the land and the other in the water. His message is of global importance. When he called out seven thunders sounded, literally they “spoke.” What follows has puzzled many because God told John not to write down what was said. The truth is there are certain things that belong to God only and other things He has revealed completely. Look at Deuteronomy 29:29 with me.
Deuteronomy 29:29 ESV
29 “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.
There is another category however, and that is there are things God revealed to His prophets and apostles that were not to be revealed until “later” (see Daniel 12:1-13) or even “never” because they were specifically for them only. Notice what Paul stated in 2 Corinthians 12:4.
2 Corinthians 12:4 ESV
4 and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter.
We don’t know what was said but it obviously it was not important for us to know in this life or if ever. After this we see the strong angel raise his hands to God and make an oath (see Genesis 14:22-24; Ezekiel 20:5-6) that there would be no more delay in bringing about the seventh trumpet call. This is significant because the seventh trumpet will usher in the seven bowls or plagues which is the final judgment on Rome. Now is when we get the “interlude” wherein the church is told what God expects from them during this time. The focus is now on the little scroll. First, the scroll is open indicating the information is ready to be known. Secondly, John was to take the scroll. God delivered his word to us (2 Timothy 3:16) but we are the ones that must “take it, study it, and apply it” (Romans 10:17). Thirdly John was to eat the book and it would be sweet to eat but bitter to the stomach. Eating it suggest John was to partake of the teachings of the scroll (see John 6:27, 63). The sweetness represents salvation found through God’s word and the bitterness represents sin pointed out by God’s word. For everyone that loves God and his word it is both sweet and bitter which we should do well to remember when we teach other this word. Lastly, John was to teach what he learned to everyone. Remember there was a great partial judgment that would awaken some to listen to the truth and it was the churches responsibility to teach those that were seeking as is ours today. We are in difficult times but times like this open up opportunities to spread the word which might not otherwise have opened, and let’s make sure we are ready to teach when those opportunities arise.
