The Fruit Part 3
Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self Control
Today we will finish our study on the Fruit
For those of you who have missed you can go back and re watch them
But we understand the differences between the fruit and the gifts
The fruit everyone that is a child of God can and should be producing in your life the whole fruit
The fruit is not 9 different fruits but rather they are one fruit with 9 different parts and they are one because they come from one and they build off of each other
They are only produced through the work of Christ in you
You and I cannot produce them alone or by ourselves but it is through a personal relationship with Christ and it is the work of Christ in you that produces them
Which means church it is all dependent on your own personal walk with Christ
I cannot make the decision for you, you parents or spouses cannot make that decision for you, your friends cannot make that decision for you
This is entirely up to you
And when we say it is the work of Christ it is just that, see God is faithful to His part
When we are faithful and running after Jesus and reading and praying through our Bibles and sharing the Gospel and being a light, God begins to work inside us and through us for His glory not ours
But that work can and will only happen when we are faithful in our side of the relationship
Picture this, if you talked to Jesus one time when you were 7 and then once in a blue moon say only at church camp till your 18 then not much after that and then you sit here today and wonder why God is not working in your life
It is because you are not walking with Him
When Jesus said Love the Lord Your God with all your heart soul mind and strength, He didn't mean only when it easy for you, or only when you want to He meant all of the time 100% of who you are and 100% of the time
So church this morning I want to be very clear that the fruit we have been talking about is because God is at work in your life but you have to keep up your side of this personal relationship with Christ, you have to work at it too
Galatians 5:22–23 NASB95
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
of the 9 part fruit we have covered Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness and today we will finish this up and talk about Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control
Faithfulness is just that to be faithful
to be faithful means you are loyal, dependable, and reliable
It would see that we just talked about that earlier when it comes to our relationship with Christ
To be faithful also means to trust in the Lord Jesus Christ
Hebrews 11:1–6 NASB95
1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by it the men of old gained approval. 3 By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible. 4 By faith Abel offered to God a better sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained the testimony that he was righteous, God testifying about his gifts, and through faith, though he is dead, he still speaks. 5 By faith Enoch was taken up so that he would not see death; and he was not found because God took him up; for he obtained the witness that before his being taken up he was pleasing to God. 6 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.
vs 2-5 share a little bit about what faith is
If you go on and read the rest of the Chapter you see what else faith did
vs 6 goes on to explain that without Faith it is impossible to please God
Because Faith is believing God is who He says He is and that He did what He said He did
Faith is believing the Bible to be the true word of God
vs 1 explains that Faith is exactly that
Faith is the Assurance of things Hoped For
The things we hope for is our Salvation
Faith is the Assurance of our Salvation
Because of the Conviction or Evidence of the things we haven’t seen
Faith is knowing that you are saved because of a personal relationship with Christ but that you have physically seen Christ
Church we are to be a faithful people
2 Corinthians 5:7 NASB95
7 for we walk by faith, not by sight—
When we come to Christ through a personal relationship with Jesus then and only then will He begin to produce faithfulness and then our faith begins to grow
Gentleness can sometimes be misconstrued and people think that gentle people are weak but that is not the case
Gentleness and we have talked about this before but it is how you approach those people and we saw from the Sermon on the Mount that we are to be gentle
We are to approach people in a gentle manner with grace and mercy
That does not mean that you are weak and allow others to walk all over you
There is a softness to gentleness but it is through grace and mercy
There is a softness yet with sternness as well if that makes any sense at all
Rather than yelling at someone and biting there head off to explain what they did wrong you approach them with gentleness and pull them off to the side and explain to them what they did wrong and who they can fix it
Rather than knocking on someones doors and the first thing our of your mouth is to tell them if they don’t know Jesus they will burn in hell
You start off with gentleness and explain why you are there and then as you begin to share the Gospel you explain that God loves them and that their sin all the bad things they have done separate them from Christ but God loved them enough to send His son to die on the cross for them and pay their debt of sin so they don’t have to spend eternity in Hell
Gentleness does not mean you are weak or that you should be walked over
Gentleness is being calm is a crazy world
Philippians 4:5 NASB95
5 Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near.
We are to be Gentle, and when we are gentle church it allows us opportunities to share the Gospel with those people
And it is only done through a personal relationship with Christ
I hope by now you know that the fruit is only produced through a personal relationship with Christ but in case you missed it listen
The fruit of the Spirit of God are only produced through a personal relationship with God
Self Control
this one might step on some toes
Self Control is the ability to control yourself in times of temptation
But how can that be if the fruit is only produced through a personal relationship with Christ
Because it is Christ working in you to give you self control
Self Control is showing restraint
Self Control is not being impulsive
Self Control is staying focused on Christ
1 Corinthians 10:13–14 NASB95
13 No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it. 14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.
God has given you away out of temptation use it
Paul then goes on to say Flee, do what you need to do to get away from that temptation
Self Control is also realizing you have a problem and seeking help to fix that problem
Maybe you have a problem with pornography, or drinking, or drugs, or gossiping, or lying, or and we could go on and on and on with a list of what you might be tempted with
But self control is saying no to that and focusing on Christ
sometimes and more often than not you enlist the help of brothers and sisters in Christ to help you grow in your self control
Self Control is the ability to recognize the warning signs and then doing something about it
Warning signs do no good unless you do something about it
Self Control is choosing to do something about it
And if you will recall our default setting is to sin so left to ourselves we will sin but because of Christ in us we can choose to not sin through the power of Christ that lives in us
This morning Church you and I need to understand it is just that
the Power of the living God who raised His own Son from the grave that lives inside us and becasue of that we can go out and produce the Fruit
not the fruitS but the one fruit with different parts
When we started this study a few wks ago we gave you some questions to begin to ask yourself and God
Am I producing fruit in my life
What areas of my life do I need to allow Christ to do work on
Which parts of the fruit am I producing and which am I not and why
I wold encourage you to continue to ask those questions during your personal study
