What is Faith?

Hebrews 11:1 NKJV
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Why Do We Need Faith?

Hebrews 11:6 NKJV
But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

How Do We Obtain Faith?

Romans 12:3 NIV
For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.

The Apostle’s Request

Luke 17:5–6 NKJV
And the apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” So the Lord said, “If you have faith as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be pulled up by the roots and be planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.

Increase our faith!

What caused them to realize they needed more faith?

Jesus had just told the story of the Rich man and Lazarus. He then talked about offending each other. And said, if forgiveness is asked by someone 7 times a day that they should forgive. They knew that they were lacking in the area of faith, and so their prayer was give us more faith.

The Lord’s Response

You can have faith as small as a mustard seed, and you can tell a tree to be pulled up by the roots, and it will obey.

The size of our faith is not important
How we use our faith is important
Faith grows the more you use it
2 Thessalonians 1:3 NKJV
We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is fitting, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all abounds toward each other,
Acts 16:5 NKJV
So the churches were strengthened in the faith, and increased in number daily.
John 12:42–43 NKJV
Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.
Matthew 8:10 NKJV
When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed, “Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!
Mark 4:30–32 NKJV
Then He said, “To what shall we liken the kingdom of God? Or with what parable shall we picture it? It is like a mustard seed which, when it is sown on the ground, is smaller than all the seeds on earth; but when it is sown, it grows up and becomes greater than all herbs, and shoots out large branches, so that the birds of the air may nest under its shade.”

The Lord’s Example

Luke 17:9–10 The Message
Does the servant get special thanks for doing what’s expected of him? It’s the same with you. When you’ve done everything expected of you, be matter-of-fact and say, ‘The work is done. What we were told to do, we did.’ ”

A servant only does what he is commanded to do.

God’s rewards are of grace, not of merit.

Our faith is increased when we walk in obedience to the commands of Christ.

Our faith is the way that we overcome the world

1 John 5:4–5 NKJV
For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
