Spiritual Guidance: Sermon 5/17/2020 Title: “The Symptoms of being led by the Spirit” Text >Acts 2:42-47 42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common (community spread). 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need (very sick people!). 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts (delirious with fever!). They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts (showing more symptoms) (where is the sanitizer?), 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people (community spread). And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved (an epidemic that will soon turn into a worldwide pandemic). >Acts 2:1-14 (MSG)(Wuhan China) 2 1-4 When the Feast of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place (Where is the social distancing?). Without warning there was a sound like a strong wind, gale force—no one could tell where it came from. It filled the whole building. Then, like a wildfire, the Holy Spirit spread through their ranks, and they started speaking in a number of different languages as the Spirit prompted them. 5-11 There were many Jews staying in Jerusalem just then, devout pilgrims from all over the world. When they heard the sound, they came on the run. Then when they heard, one after another, their own mother tongues being spoken, they were thunderstruck. They couldn’t for the life of them figure out what was going on, and kept saying, “Aren’t these all Galileans? How come we’re hearing them talk in our various mother tongues? Parthians, Medes, and Elamites; Visitors from Mesopotamia, Judea, and Cappadocia,     Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia,     Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene; Immigrants from Rome, both Jews and proselytes; Even Cretans and Arabs! “They’re speaking our languages, describing God’s mighty works!” 12 Their heads were spinning; they couldn’t make head or tail of any of it. They talked back and forth, confused: “What’s going on here?” 13 Others joked, “They’re drunk on cheap wine.” >Galatians 5:19-25 19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. DRUNK with Flesh…symptoms of intoxication… 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. DRUNK in the Spirit…symptoms of intoxication… Trans: Can you be infected but show no symptoms? Can you say you are infilled/intoxicated with the Holy Spirit and but be joyless, hateful, impatient, rude, bad to the bone, unfaithful, and out of control? *Community Spread def. “People have been infected with a virus in an area…” The virus spreads from human contact…within 6 ft… -The Good News travels at the speed of relationships. 1. Symptom #1: Love A. The Holy Spirit leads us to love others…neighbors…people we don’t love… -When you are “being constantly filled” with the Holy Spirit you will exhibit symptoms like loving people you may have not liked before…Loving people the way God loves them… -“Filled” and “DRUNK” -Drunk people are full of alcohol…means same thing… >Acts 2:42 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need (very sick people!). -What would cause someone to do that? -The LOVE of God in us…Filled with the Spirit… -What would cause someone to think of someone other than themselves? -They must be DRUNK! *Drunk def. “affected by alcohol to the extent of losing control of one's faculties or behavior.” -You behave differently than you did before…>Galatians 5:22-25… B. The Holy Spirit leads us to behave like Christ… >Phil. 2:1-4 2 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. -Are you kidding me? -How can that ever happen? -Being constantly filled/drunk in the Spirit will lead you to demonstrate behaviors like these… -And it began to spread like fire…get it? Fire of the Holy Spirit! -“Being like-minded”… “being one in spirit and of one mind.” Repeat!!! -“Having the same love” God’s love, not perverted love… -Not being selfish… -Valuing others above themselves…Sick People!!!!! -Looking first to the needs of others…What? -Spiritual Guidance leads us to “keep in step with the Spirit” which then produces the Fruit of the Spirit! 2. Symptom #2: Life A. The Holy Spirit leads us to experience joy. -A joyless life is no life… -Nobody wants to be like someone who isn’t joyful… -You are either joyful or you are not… -If you are constantly connected to the vine… >John 15:1-8 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. B. The Holy Spirit leads us to experience Happiness. -They were filled with “Awe.” (a feeling of reverential respect mixed with fear or wonder). -They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts (showing more symptoms) (where is the sanitizer?), 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people (community spread).  -Glad, Enjoy, Awe are words that describe happiness… 3. Symptom #3: Light A. The Holy Spirit leads people out of the darkness >Galatians 5:19-21 19-21 It is obvious what kind of life develops out of trying to get your own way all the time: repetitive, loveless, cheap sex; a stinking accumulation of mental and emotional garbage; frenzied and joyless grabs for happiness; trinket gods; magic-show religion; paranoid loneliness; cutthroat competition; all-consuming-yet-never-satisfied wants; a brutal temper; an impotence to love or be loved; divided homes and divided lives; small-minded and lopsided pursuits; the vicious habit of depersonalizing everyone into a rival; uncontrolled and uncontrollable addictions; ugly parodies of community. I could go on. -People who are in the darkness do not know where they are going… -They are lost…Sheep without a Shepherd to lead them… -The Holy Spirit does not lead us to revival or prophets…He leads us to the lost... >Luke 19:10 “the Son of Man came to seek and save the lost.” -One of the most important aspects of practicing the Spiritual Disciplines is that we begin to see things from God’s perspective…30,000 feet up… -And what breaks the heart of God begins to break our hearts… -Look at the lostness of Galatians 5:19-21… B. The Holy Spirit leads people into the light >Ephesians 5:8-20 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. 14 This is why it is said: “Wake up, sleeper,     rise from the dead,     and Christ will shine on you.” 15 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish but understand what the Lord’s will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. *Communion Do this in remembrance of Me… Remember His great love for us… Remember how He came to show us the way…light…
