Alêtheia Christian Fellowship ~ 082408 ~ Romans 14

What a Christian can and cannot do.

****Hand over your entire being to God

       Be transformed by getting it.

You are in the Body - get busy.

Humbly excel in Agapê & Philia in the church.

Be agreeable.

       Submit, submit, and submit.

Pay your obligations.

Romans 14:1 ~ Now accept the one who is weak in faith, but not for the purpose of passing judgment on his opinions.

You strong, mature Christians accept those who are weak in faith…

Do you know who the strong are? Do you understand what demonstrates spiritual weakness?

Opinions = dialogismo>v, and is always with a negative connotation as the enemies of Jesus had other dialogismo>v and Paul uses the same word in Romans 1, for, “men became futile in their dialogismo>v.

Do you know who the strong are and who the weak in faith are?

Romans 14:2-4 ~ 2One person has faith that he may eat all things, but he who is weak eats vegetables only. 3The one who eats is not to regard with contempt the one who does not eat, and the one who does not eat is not to judge the one who eats, for God has accepted him. 4Who are you to judge the servant of another? To his own master he stands or falls; and he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand.

Andy & Opie – Taught him to be caring and Andy assumed the worst – explain Don’t you say another word! Do you understand me? Well, do you understand?

Opie seems weak and Andy seems strong, but it was the opposite. Pilate ~ Jesus or Nero ~ Paul

God’s economy always seems backwards to us.

The weak in faith person is the one who must maintain control – the one who is worried all the time about what can & cannot be done.

Look at the Spanish Inquisition – many really had faith; it was just weak – they had to fix things for God.

Jews & Jesus, Muslims & Israel

Notice: Paul is not talking about:

       1) Foundational Truth/doctrine

(Jesus is the only way to God)

       2) The Gospel of Salvation

                    (Grace by Faith alone)

       3) Obvious sin!

                    (Adultery, hatred & gossip)

Paul is talking about disputable things.  What constitutes disputable things or what’s the difference between what’s important and what’s not?

«««The longer your list the weaker your faith.

The mature in faith, i.e. the ones trusting God more fully are not to view weaker people with contempt.

Understand their weakness and pray for them.

The Weak, with all their rules, concerns and nervousness must not judge others – if you must be neurotic, keep it to yourself!

Trust that God will make him stand – it is not your job

Judging others is taking God’s seat!

Correcting others is taking God’s authority

Monumentally arrogant to judge or correct others

Romans 14:5-9 ~ 5One person regards one day above another, another regards every day alike. Each person must be fully convinced in his own mind. 6He who observes the day, observes it for the Lord, and he who eats, does so for the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who eats not, for the Lord he does not eat, and gives thanks to God. 7For not one of us lives for himself, and not one dies for himself; 8for if we live, we live for the Lord, or if we die, we die for the Lord; therefore whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. 9For to this end Christ died and lived again, that He might be Lord both of the dead and of the living.

Each person must be fully convinced in his own mind –   Team sport made up of eclectic individuals

Do what you must & let others do the same.

We exist for Christ – that’s the reason He came!

Hand over your entire being to God

       Be transformed by getting it.

You are in the Body - get busy.

Humbly excel in Agapê & Philia in the church.

Be agreeable.

       Submit, submit, and submit.

Pay your obligations.

Romans 14:10-13 ~ 10But you, why do you judge your brother? Or you again, why do you regard your brother with contempt? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. 11For it is written, “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to Me, and every tongue shall give praise to God.” 12So then each one of us will give an account of himself to God. 13Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather determine this—not to put an obstacle or a stumbling block in a brother’s way.

Why do you weak judge – why do you strong have contempt?

One of the most significant Truths in the world… We will all answer to God!

Now, comprehend this Truth…

       Christianity is not about you.

God is far more concerned about the Body than                the individuallook at His Son!

We must be more concerned about the Body than   ourselves.

Spock said, “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.”

Tension? NO, NO, NO. The needs of the one will be achieved by meeting the needs of the many.

Men’s basketball – individual stars = bronze, while a selfless team = gold.

Romans 14:14-17 ~ 14I know and am convinced in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself; but to him who thinks anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean. 15For if because of food your brother is hurt, you are no longer walking according to love. Do not destroy with your food him for whom Christ died. 16Therefore do not let what is for you a good thing be spoken of as evil; 17for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

Be spoken of as evil – it will be if your liberty caused separation for another.

You will be judged for unlove. Woe a millstone

Go to the Blue Moon and cajole a Christian into having a beer with you – you leave, he stays.

Romans 14:18-21 ~ 18For he who in this way serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men. 19So then we pursue the things which make for peace and the building up of one another. 20Do not tear down the work of God for the sake of food. All things indeed are clean, but they are evil for the man who eats and gives offense. 21It is good not to eat meat or to drink wine, or to do anything by which your brother stumbles.

Faith and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit resulting in love is acceptable to God & man.

Stumbles is prosko>ptw, a word that helps mature Christians understand their obligation – it means to fall.

Just because someone does not like something does not mean you must give it up.

Romans 14:22&23 ~ 22The faith which you have, have as your own conviction before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves. 23But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and whatever is not from faith is sin.

We are concerned about Christ and His Bride – our Body.

Olympics demonstrate a nationalism that is rare today, but people used to care more about grander things.

Macarthur - duty, honor, country.

The Cross of Christ makes us who we are.

Christianity is not about self-help - it’s about God and the Body and the lost and we discipline ourselves for self-control to benefit others.

Self-help makes you a stronger person who needs    God less.

Christianity is not about working to please God – it’s about recognizing God’s love and desiring to please God.

If Scotty dramatically improves in Basketball, I will respect him, be proud of him, be pleased with him and love him more.

WHAT CAN A CHRISTIAN DO & WHAT CAN’T WE DO
