Alêtheia Christian Fellowship ~~ 051108 ~~ Mother’s Day

We are *so dumb* – it is really beyond belief…
Now that’s how you start a Mother’s Day sermon!
Our thinking is counter-productive, like *spitting *into the wind…

Everyone *wants peace and love* – kindness and safety – but we don’t know how to grasp it.
One of the reasons we are dumb is a *simple lack of understanding* – so let’s try to gain some perspective from God.

*G** *A lot of things going on in our present society… We are *distracted*!
*Yet we don’t recognize the distractions - We feel confident, but when confronted* with a different view we *fail to run* the race due to *fear* our apple cart will be upset.
*G** *Video

Today is about mothers and *all women* can function as mothers.
*Motherhood is founded in marriage*.
*G** Genesis 2:18&22-25 ~~* 18Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.”
22The Lord God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man.
23The man said, “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman (Ishshah אִשָּׁה), because she was taken out of Man (Ish אִישׁ).”
24For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.
25And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.
She’s a Helpmate, not a *hindrance* or a *possession*.
*Rejoining the single person in marriage* – men and women are really only half people.
To be *naked* and unashamed means you share everything, but we don’t *fully trust* even our spouse!
*So*, this is not the norm – people don’t become one flesh they manipulate the other person to conform to their comfort zone.
Marriage is just a *bad joke* – because we’ve abandoned God

Why do we start with marriage?
It is the *foundation* of the family and therefore *society*!
As the family goes, so goes society.
What has *caused* the problem?

*G Genesis 3:16 ~~* To the woman He said, “I will greatly multiply your pain in childbirth, in pain you will bring forth children; yet your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”
This is ½ of the issue – *never fear Father’s day is near*.
The woman’s *curse* is actually two things:

*       1) Pain in childbirth*, so happy mother’s day.
*       2) Desire for a man that totally frustrates you*.
He’s more powerful and Biblically in charge yet he acts like a self-centered boy.
1- So the fall è sin è selfishness è fear è *control* è conflict è war.
2- He rules badly!

*Feminism* is only 150 years old and also fairly localized

*G* Slide 1st Wave rights                             Value

*G* Slide 2nd Wave equal opportunity           Rights

*G* Slide 3rd Wave anti men                         Individualism

How did *feminism begin?*
Starting with the *renaissance* and especially Rene *Descartes* people *questioned authority and institutions *like Papal authority, university leadership and the nobility’s divine right of rule.
Anti-institutionalism lead to the *Age of Reason*, where logic and reason were superior to *archaic structures *and *unwieldy bureaucracy*.
As a backlash to pure reason *skeptics like Hume* developed *empiricism* – we can only know what is physically evident.
While Hume was skeptical of what could not be demonstrated his followers quickly jumped to the idea that the *supernatural does not exist*.
*Modernism* of the 1800’s led to an *abandonment of religion* especially Christianity and the *carnage* of the first half of the 20th century where more people were killed by atheistic regimes than by all the holy wars before.
By the early 20th century people could see little reason not to grant women the vote.
*It was enlightened and modern*.
After more than 100 million people died in the first half of that century *postmodernism* took hold and is what we all believe today.
*Cyborg Feminism* – there is no gender!
Donna Haraway criticizes traditional notions of feminism, particularly its emphasis on identity; she uses the metaphor of a cyborg in order to construct a postmodern feminism that moves beyond dualisms and the limitations of traditional gender, feminism, and politics.
Haraway's cyborg is an attempt to break away from *Oedipal narratives* and *Christian origin-myths like Genesis*.
She writes: "*The cyborg does not dream of community on the model of the organic family, this time without the oedipal project.
The cyborg would not recognize the Garden of Eden; it is not made of mud and cannot dream of returning to dust*."
The *denigration of God’s plan* will be complete, but what we are here to *talk about is MOTHER’S*

I began by saying *we’re dumb*…
We’re dumb because *we don’t realize* that every attempt to *make women equal to men is a denigration of women*!

*Hilary* wants to be president and if she were to succeed most people would think of that as *her greatest achievement* – but in God’s economy her greatest achievement was being a mom.
*G 1 Timothy 2:15 ~~* But women will be preserved through the bearing of children if they continue in faith and love and sanctity with self-restraint.
Paul says that women will be *saved through childbirth* if they continue in the faith

We think of that as a *negative *– the old barefoot and pregnant thing, but the Bible is saying women have this ultimate – *most noble calling*.
*Genesis 1:27&28 ~~* 27God created man in His own image, in the *image of God* He created him; male and female He created them.
28God *blessed* them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and *rule* over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
Women are greater than men in many respects, but the *lie of Satan* and the *corruption of the fall* keep women from *seeing where their true superiority lies*.
The *supreme value of a woman* is to *create an oasis* of *peace, love, kindness and safety*.
*1-* Women are made in the *image of God* – God is female as much as male…

*2-* Women are *blessed by God* in being *fruitful* and in *creating order and civilization for the next generation*.
*What man has accomplished anything without having a mother?*
* *
*And so what does the Godly woman look like?*
* *
*G Proverbs 31* comprises an *acrostic *of *22* verses beginning with the letters of the Hebrew alphabet, a poetic form which suggests a complete exploration of its subject.

Rabbis believed it was Solomon and so these were the words of King David’s wife *Bathsheba* – a wise woman who instilled a love of wisdom in her son.
*G **"** **Proverbs 31:10-30* ~~ 10An excellent wife, her worth is far above jewels.
11aThe heart of her husband trusts in her… 12She does him good and not evil all the days of her life.
13bShe works with her hands in delight… 15aShe rises also while it is still night and gives food to her household… 16She considers a field and buys it; from her earnings she plants a vineyard.
10*Excellent* = *strong*, not strong-willed or independent, but strength of character – strong morally, physically and spiritually.
(*It is better to live in a corner of the roof than in a house shared with a contentious woman*.
Proverbs 21&25)

10She is *priceless*!
There is nothing more valuable to a man – boys, *pay attention*, there will be a test.
11aA *trusted wife is a trustworthy wife*; she is faithful and shows discretion and integrity promoting her family.
12She works for her *husband’s well-being and reputation*, so he is blessed by her receiving good instead of evil.
13bShe *enjoys her work* because it blesses her family and she *loves her family*!
What a novel idea?

15aShe sacrifices willingly as a *selfless servant*.
Some think that is weakness, but what strength it really takes.
16She *earns extra* so the *family* can be better off.
*G *20She extends her hand to the poor, and she stretches out her hands to the needy.
25Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she smiles at the future.
26She opens her mouth in wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
27She looks well to the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness.
28Her children rise up and bless her; her husband also, and he      praises her…

20She is not myopic, but helps others as well

25She is doing everything she can and leaves the rest in God’s hands so she can boldly approach anything in life.
26She is intelligent enough to share her wisdom in a way that can be accepted.
27She is not lazy.
28She will be blessed in this life – even if it does not seem so today.
*G *30Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.
She will be blessed by others also, but most importantly she will be blessed in eternity

The whole thing starts from a correct understanding of God.
Titus 2 = oijkourgo>v, Home workers. 1 Timothy 5 = oijkodespote>w, Home Rulers

We assume the Apostle Paul and therefore the Bible and therefore God is a *misogynist*.
