Alêtheia Christian Fellowship ~ 041308 ~ Romans 5b

SLIDE - We have learned in the first four chapters that we have been JUSTIFIED through, not works, not ritual, not affiliation, but by faith, we therefore have peace.

Peace is toward (pro>v) God; not by our initiative or work, but through the active agency (dia>) of Jesus - so let us enter in and posses it from our side of the equation.

And we have received our Introduction, prosagwgh>, Christ brings us over to where God is and presents us toward Him thereby giving us access to God.

Now we have a permanent standing (perfect), if we will grasp it – take ownership of it and stand!

We looked at the first two of 3 exultations/reasons to brag/boast related to our new found peace and subsequent access.

1st Boast: hope of the glory of God i.e. eternal perspective.

2nd Boast: is our tribulations i.e. qli~yiv.

Let’s see what number 3 is…

Romans 5:6-11 ~ 6For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. 8But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. 10For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. 11And not only this, but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.

Verse 6:

States the beginning of an, a fortiori argument

Jesus came at precisely the right time, not just for the Greek, but for the sin to be appropriate; strategic time.

Jesus died, uJpe>r, on behalf of/for the sake of/instead of, i.e. in substitution for us.

Verse 7:

Is a parenthesis answering the obvious objection and is similar to the grenade story of Navy Seal, Michael Monsoor

Slide: Verse 8:

Picks up the first part of the argument again - God proves His love for mankind by giving what was most precious while we were sinners.

Verse 9:

Gives the second part of the argument – how much more then, will God save us now that we are His friends through Christ?

God gave Jesus over in place of you when you were a sinner – how much more will God keep you now that you’ve accepted His plan and Christ’s sacrifice?

Verse 10:

The same a fortiori argument, but with nuanced addition

Sinner is enemy and while sinner is used of our behavior, enemy is used of God’s behavior.

God cannot accept rebellion, yet He loves us so Jesus’ blood produces reconciliation

Reconciliation, katallagh>, exchange one thing for another, i.e. peace.

We are saved in His life = zwh> - life producing force, i.e. the resurrection.

SLIDE: Verse 11:

Gives us our 3rd thing in which to exult/boast - We boast in God Himself because of His perfect plan and will giving us relationship through the completed work of Christ.

Why because we have received the RECONCILIATION - so the important point is our recognition of peace.

Reconciled is toward us where propitiation is toward God

It’s not about you it is about what God has done so realize the war is over - Gilligan’s Island and the Japanese Soldier.

You are eternally secure in Christ IF you want to be eternally secure.

Everyone wants to be eternally secure as they would define it, but we are talking about the eternal security of Biblical Christianity.

To genuinely desire this specific eternal security implies that you have accepted God’s plan by faith and continue to accept that reality.

We exult because God’s love for us is utterly realistic – He already knows who you are and who you’ll be – so there is zero chance that He will abandon you!

Stop trying to be something you’re not and rest in Him.

You cannot erase or make up for the past – the least you can do is live for Him and for others.

If you will accept it God has saved you forever and nothing can change that fact.

BOAST - Be confident – not because of you – but because of Him – you are certain God will accept you because you accept Jesus.

Romans 5:12-16 ~ 12Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned— 13for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come. 15But the free gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many. 16The gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned; for on the one hand the judgment arose from one transgression resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the free gift arose from many transgressions resulting in justification.

Verse 12:

Genesis 2:16-17 ~ 16The Lord God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; 17but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”

She wasn’t in the picture yet.

Genesis 3:6 ~ When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.

She told God she was deceived, blaming the Devil – Adam blamed Eve, but they were both held responsible for their ROLE

Paul teaches in, 1 Timothy 2:14 ~ it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.

SLIDE: Yet here it is clear that Adam is the sinner, why?

Roles and the subsequent responsibilities – the command was given to Adam and Adam was the leader so even though Eve was deceived it was Adam’s failure to protect her and by extension the entire human race

5:13for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 5:14Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.

Paul has already discussed the purpose of the Law and is only getting started.

For now his point is that although people did not violate a clear and personal directive from God, as Adam did, they are still cursed.

We will discuss this further next week

For now, although sin in one sense is not imputed, the result of Adam’s sin was.

Death was the promised outcome of disobedience – the Second Law of Thermodynamics takes effect.

Type,” is a Theological concept today, but arose from the Greek word tu>pov, transliterated as typos, meaning “example”. Many people talk about all kinds of Old Testament types, but we must be careful in designating types.

5:15But the free gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many.

But,” clearly indicates that while there are similarities between Adam and Jesus, it is not an exact analogy.

SLIDE: The word translated as “many,” in two places in this verse serve to demonstrate that all fall into the respective categories, but not all have yet received the outcome yet.

All will die, but only many have so far, while all are savable only many will be saved.
