Alêtheia 11-27-05

Silver and Gold… 800 years ago the great theologian and philosopher, Thomas *Aquinas*, was with Pope Innocent IV.
Here we are just going to the Temple to pray and we see the familiar beggar.
God leads us to the man, but not to give him money.
God heals the man in what is one of the most amazing miracles seen.
Then the explanation takes on a life of it's own as the Holy Spirit anoints us and we add 100's more Christians bringing the total to *more than ten thousand*.
*Acts 4:1-3 ~~* As they were speaking to the people, the *priests* and the *captain* of the temple /guard/ and the *Sadducees *came up to them, *(KJV: came upon them)* being greatly disturbed because they were *teaching* the people and proclaiming in Jesus the *resurrection* from the dead.
And they laid hands on them and put them in jail* *until the next day, for it was already evening.
* *
*(KJV: came upon them) *Descended on them with hostile intent
*Priests - *on duty, primarily Sadducees
*Captain - *A priest,* *2nd to the High Priests in honor and power
*Teaching - *greatly disturbed because they were teaching
*Resurrection - *Sadducees didn't believe in it

*Acts 4:4 ~~* But *many* of those who had heard the message believed; and the number of the *men *came to be about five thousand.
*Many - but not nearly all*
*Men - more than 10,000 Christians worldwide*

*Acts 4:5-7 ~~* On the next day, their *rulers* and *elders* and *scribes* were gathered together in Jerusalem; and *Annas* the high priest /was there,/ and *Caiaphas* and *John* and *Alexander*, and all who were of high-priestly descent.
*(KJV: has, "in Jerusalem," at the end of verse 6 instead of 5) *When they had placed them in the *center*, they /began to/ inquire, “By what *power*, or in what *name*, have you done this?

*(KJV: has, "in Jerusalem," at the end of verse 6 instead of 5)*

The* Sadducees *were like the Jewish* aristocracy*, the noble family line of priests reaching back to Aaron.
They were *"Fundamentalists,"* Bible only with a literal Bible interpretation and a very conservative approach.
They had few members, but great power and extreme wealth.
They would do anything to keep it, so they were on good terms with Rome to keep the *status quo*.
Augustus deposed Herod's son *Archelaus* (are-keh-LAY-us) ajrce>laov, ruler of Samaria, Idumea and Judea in 6 A.D., so the areas became Roman Provinces ruled by procurators or governors based in Caesarea under Syria.
The first was the Governor of Syria, *Quirinius* who in 6 or 7 A.D. appointed Annas son of Seth, High Priest.
Then *Valerius Gratus appointed by Tiberius in 14* removed Annas.
He was succeeded by his son *Eleazar, Greek Alexander*, then by two more sons.
*Joseph Caiaphas*, Annas' son-in-law was appointed by the fourth Governor in 25, just prior to the arrival of Pontius Pilate in 26 A.D.
Annas' son Jonathan or *John, here, followed Caiaphas in 36* A.D. and Annas' son *Annas II, was the 5th son to be High Priest and is the guy who had James the Just stoned in 62* A.D.
In the year *36 C.E., both Caiaphas and the Prefect Pilate* were dismissed from office by Syrian governor, *Vitellius, Emperor Caligula*, according to Jewish historian Josephus.
It seems likely that the cause of their dismissal was growing public unhappiness with their close cooperation.
Josephus tells us Pilate was constantly upsetting the people through his lack of understanding and that Annas' family were incredibly cruel in judging and eliminating their opponents; just like the Mafia.
But it was *Annas' son John* who was appointed.
The *Scribes were the Pharisees* and vastly outnumbered the priestly Sadducees who tolerated them because of their popularity with the people.
The Pharisees believed in a more *spiritual interpretation and gave great weight to other non-Biblical writings*.
They were experts in the Scriptures and held a view that change was ok.
They were openly *defiant toward the Roman* occupation.
The Sadducees and Pharisees became quite legalistic, the *Zealots (Massada 74)* were all or nothing and the *Essenes (Dead Sea Scrolls) were an ascetic, esoteric, and monastic* brotherhood from the second century B.C. to the second century A.D. who practiced a community of goods and rigorous discipline and for the most part shunned the company of women.

*All as opposed to Jesus who taught it's a heart thing* *and it won't work with a purely human heart.*
Standing in the *center* of the elevated semicircle of seated leaders, the Sanhedrin was 71 dudes plus all their assistants and other interested parties.
By what authority!*
Teaching *was the primary concern especially in the Temple and especially about the* resurrection.*
“By what *power*, or in what *name*, have you done this?
What Seminary did you graduate from, how many degrees do you hold?

*When did we authorize you?*

*Acts 4:8-12 ~~* Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers and elders of the people, *(KJV: elders of Israel)* if we are on trial today for a benefit done to a sick man, as to how this man has been made well, let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by this /name/ this man stands here before you in good health.
“He is the stone which was rejected by *you*, the builders, /but/ which became the chief corner /stone.
/“*And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved*.”
*Psalm 118*

When it's this important there is no variation.
People complain about various new translations, but this is the foundational orthodoxy of Christianity.
DNT:12And salvation is in none other, for neither is there another name under heaven which is given among men by which we must be saved.
\\ KJV:12Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
\\ YLT:12and there is not salvation in any other, for there is no other name under the heaven that hath been given among men, in which it behoveth us to be saved.’
\\ NCV:12Jesus is the only One who can save people.
His name is the only power in the world that has been given to save people.
We must be saved through him.”
\\ NIV:12Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.”
\\ NKJV:12Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
\\ NRSV:12There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must be saved.”
\\ ISVNT:12There is no salvation by anyone else, for there is no other name under heaven given among people by which we must be saved.”
\\ NLT:12There is salvation in no one else!
There is no other name in all of heaven for people to call on to save them.”
\\ NASB:12“And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”
*Acts 4:13-17 ~~* Now as they observed the *confidence* of Peter *and John* and understood that they were *uneducated* *and untrained* men, they were amazed, and /began/ to recognize them as having *been with Jesus*.
And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say in reply.
But when they had ordered them to leave the Council, they /began/ to confer with one another, saying, “What shall we do with these men?
For the fact that a noteworthy miracle has taken place through them is apparent to all who live in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.
“But so that it will not spread any further among the people, let us warn them to *speak no longer to any man in this name*.”

*"When policeman break the law, there is no law, only the struggle to survive."
**The Christian knows that there is law whether anyone obeys or not*.
In addition there is authority given to man by God to enable some semblance of order, but that order is maintained because of the struggle to survive, the will to power.

*Acts 4:18-22 ~~* And when they had summoned them, they commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to give heed to you rather than to God, you be the judge; for we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.”
When they had threatened them further, they let them go (finding no basis on which to punish them) on account of the people, because they were all glorifying God for what had happened; for the man was more than forty years old on whom this miracle of healing had been performed.
“*Whether it is right* in the sight of God to give heed to you rather than to God, you be the judge;

for *we cannot stop* speaking about what we have seen and heard.”
*Acts 4:23-26 ~~*  When they had been released, they went to their own /companions/ and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them.
And when they heard /this,/ they lifted their voices to God with one accord and said, “O Lord, *(KJV:** **thou /art/ God)* it is You who made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and all that is in them, who by the Holy Spirit, /through/ the mouth of our father David Your servant, said, ‘Why did the Gentiles rage, and the peoples devise futile things?
‘The kings of the earth took their stand, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord and against His Christ.’
Psalm 2:1-2

*Acts 4:27-31 ~~* “For truly in this city there were gathered together against Your holy servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose predestined to occur.
“And now, Lord, take note of their threats, and grant that Your bond-servants may speak Your word with all confidence, while You extend Your hand to heal, and signs and wonders take place through the name of Your holy servant Jesus.”
And when they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and /began/ to speak the word of God with boldness.

*Then God was pleased and He gave them what they asked for because it was a prayer truly in the name of Jesus*

Quit griping about your church; if it was perfect, you couldn't belong.
God Himself does not propose to judge a man until he is dead.
So why should you?
