Alêtheia Christian Fellowship  ~~  Sermon 92  ~~  October 16, 2005

*§ James Chapter 5:12 ~~** *But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath; but your yes is to be yes, and your no, no, so that you may not fall under judgment.
They sought to *distinguish between secular and spiritual*.
Their oaths reflected this bent.
Our Lord swept away these distinctions as arbitrary and evil.
All too often Christians continue to make these distinctions.
They have business ethics and biblical ethics, but they are not the same.
The letter is about being *real*---
Jesus says out of the overflow of our *heart* the mouth speaks---
James says we are to be *single-souled*---

*Matthew 5:33-37 ~~* “Again, you have heard that the ancients were told, ‘You shall not make false vows, but shall fulfill your vows to the Lord.’
“But I say to you, make no oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is the footstool of His feet, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.
“Nor shall you make an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.
“But let your statement be, ‘Yes, yes’ /or/' No, no’; anything beyond these is of evil.
*Liars* will go into the lake of fire---Satan is the father of lies
People of *integrity** & **stability** & **recognizing* we cannot make anything happen.
*Words never end….*
*§ James Chapter 5:13-15 ~~*
13Is anyone among you *suffering*?
/Then/ he must pray.
Is anyone *cheerful*?
He is to sing praises.
14Is anyone among you *sick 1*? /Then/ he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; 15and the prayer offered in faith will *restore* the one who is *sick 2*, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him.
*Suffering* is kakopaqe>w, cacaphony & sympathy (feeling together) misfortune, difficulty or trouble of all types.
Perhaps due to lack of faith.
*Cheerful *is eujqume>w,* *due to confidence, someone who is encouraged.
Problems pray, dealing with the problem rejoice, having real problems get the elders and God will strengthen you.
*If it was healing why not call the person with that gift?*

Don Burton---

*Sick 1* ajsqene>w, the verb and ajsqe>neia, the noun to be weak or powerless - feeling of inadequacy or physical inadequacy.
*2 Corinthians 10:7-10 ~~* Because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to *torment* me—to keep me from exalting myself!
Concerning this I implored the Lord three times that it might leave me.
And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.”
Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.
Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.
*Torment *- harass.
*Restore  *sw>sei* *the future verb of* *sw>|zw, to save, rescue or deliver.
*Sick 2*  ka>mnw, weary or discouraged, used only twice in the Bible:

*Hebrews 12:1-3 ~~* Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow *weary* and lose heart.
*When adversity comes our way*, we need divine wisdom James told us to pray for and expect to receive without being judged.
*James 1:5-7* ~~ 5But if any of you *lacks wisdom, let him ask of God*, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
6But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind.
7For that man ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord, 8/being/ a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
*Adversity should draw us toward God*, and prayer should be our first response to our trials.
In response to our prayers, He will give wisdom, strength, and peace of heart and mind

If one is in good spirits, then he should *“sing praises.”*
James has said that, *“All generous giving and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, . .
.”* (James 1:17a).
The sacrament of unction, or anointing, was in the early centuries always designed as a means of cure, and not as a preparation for death as it now is in the Roman Catholic Church.
It was not until *A.D. 852* that this sacrament did, in fact, become the Sacrament of *Extreme Unction*, administered to prepare for death.”
*James 1:2-4~~* Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.
4And let endurance have /its/ perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
*James 5:10&11 ~~* As an example, brethren, of suffering and patience, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.
We count those blessed who endured.
You have heard of the endurance of Job and have seen the outcome of the Lord’s dealings, that the Lord is full of compassion and /is/ merciful.
*Philippians 4:6&7 ~~* Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
*§ James Chapter 5:16-18 ~~*
16Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed.
The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.
17Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the earth for three years and six months.
18Then he prayed again, and the sky poured rain and the earth produced its  fruit.
This verse has been greatly abused.
It is the basis, for example, of the Roman Catholic doctrine of *auricular confession* to a priest.
Martin Luther is said to have very quickly brushed this away with the words,
*“A strange confessor!
His name is “One another.”*
Unreconciled relationships hinder prayer:
Husbands, in the same way, treat your wives with consideration as the weaker partners and show them honor as fellow heirs of the grace of life.
In this way nothing will hinder your prayers (1 Peter 3:7).
Let us have concerts of prayer, but let us not think that God is moved by mere numbers.
*Matthew 9:2-7 ~~* And they brought to Him a paralytic lying on a bed.
Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, “Take courage, son; your sins are forgiven.”
And some of the scribes said to themselves, “This /fellow/ blasphemes.”
And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, “Why are you thinking evil in your hearts?
“Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, and walk’?
“But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—then He said~* to the paralytic, “Get up, pick up your bed and go home.”
And he got up and went home.

*§ James Chapter 5:19&20 ~~*
19My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth and one turns him back, 20let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.
*Proverbs 11:30 ~~* The fruit of the righteous is like a tree producing life, \\ and the one who wins souls is wise.
Notice how James has changed the focus from the beginning verses of chapter 1 to the closing verses of chapter 5.
In the midst of our adversities, our focus initially tends to be on ourselves.
James exhorts us to joyfully endure our afflictions and to pray for wisdom.
He calls upon us to act in a way that is consistent with true religion.
In the closing verses of chapter 1, James says that true religion seeks to assist the helpless and needy, the orphans and widows.
In the closing verses of chapter 5, the focus is on others and their need for repentance.
The greatest need of all is for the sinner to turn to Christ for the forgiveness of sins and the assurance of eternal life.
The greatest need for the saint is to be walking in the Spirit and waiting for the return of the Savior, standing apart from the corruption of the world.
“Is your religion real?”
That is, is your religion genuine?
Will it save you?
That is what the Book of James is about.
It is addressed to a group of people (the Jews) who were very religious, but their words were often more pious than their works (hypocrisy).
The malady is common among professing Christians today.
Paul warned us about the appearance of religious faith without the reality of it:
*2 Timothy 3:1-5 ~~* But understand this, that in the last days difficult times will come.
For people will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, slanderers, without self-control, savage, opposed to what is good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, loving pleasure rather than loving God.
*They will maintain the outward appearance of religion but will have repudiated its power*.
