Alêtheia Christian Fellowship, Sermon 76, June 26, 2005

Mark 7:1-13 The Pharisees and some of the scribes gathered around Him when they had come from Jerusalem, 2and had seen that some of His disciples were eating their bread with impure hands, that is, unwashed.
3(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they carefully wash their hands, /thus/ observing the traditions of the elders; 4and /when they come/ from the market place, they do not eat unless they cleanse themselves; and there are many other things which they have received in order to observe, such as the washing of cups and pitchers and copper pots.)
5The Pharisees and the scribes asked~* Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with impure hands?” 6And He said to them, “Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written:
‘This people honors Me with their lips,
But their heart is far away from Me.
7    ‘But in vain do they worship Me,
Teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.’ 8“Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men.”
Washing and "kosher," food was and still is a massive part of Judaism.
It is based on whole chapters of the Torah written by Moses.
It expounds upon the written Scripture

It was later written and is called the Mishnah dating to 200A.D.

It was the Pharisees effort to be fully devoted followers of God.
Attempt to live in a perpetual state of purity, showing dedication above and beyond less scrupulous Jews.
How many do that today?
The intention may seem all well and good, but it breeds Self-righteousness.
It is religious elitism, just as with Legalists and Charismatics.
Bible is not a rule book, but rules are so much easier than relationship.
Bottom line: We want to feel good about ourself.
We say what do I have to do in order to get God off my back and on my side so I can have a better life?
Ego-------Automatic response--------Violation of other parts as the Word is distorted.
*God wants your heart*, not what you can do for Him or especially yourself.
Even so Isaiah quoted here and other prophets spoke out as Jesus did.
Amos 5:21-24 ~~ “I hate, I reject your festivals, Nor do I delight in your solemn assemblies.
“Even though you offer up to Me burnt offerings and your grain offerings, I will not accept /them;/ And I will not /even/ look at the peace offerings of your fatlings.
“Take away from Me the noise of your songs; I will not even listen to the sound of your harps.
“But let justice roll down like waters And righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.
Amos 5:18 ~~ Alas, you who are longing for the day of the LORD, For what purpose /will/ the day of the LORD /be/ to you?
It /will be/ darkness and not light;

Jesus said in Matthew 12:6&7 ~~ “But I say to you that something greater than the temple is here.
“But if you had known what this means, ‘I desire compassion, and not a sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent.
Rules are comforting and they allow us to rationalize our behavior.
I know a guy who thinks he can treat people contemptably as long as it's business.
I heard of a lady who will not attent church, but doesn't violate God's law because she fellowships in a Bible study.
Jesus doesn't answer the question because it's no question.
Jesus attacks the foundation of their religiosity

9He was also saying to them, “You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition.
10“For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, is to be put to death’; 11but you say, ‘If a man says to /his/ father or /his/ mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is to say,  given /to God/),’ 12you no longer permit him to do anything for /his/ father or /his/ mother; 13/thus /invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.”
14-23 After He called the crowd to Him again, He /began/ saying to them, “Listen to Me, all of you, and understand: 15there is nothing outside the man which can defile him if it goes into him; but the things which proceed out of the man are what defile the man.
16[“If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.”]
17When he had left the crowd /and/ entered the house, His disciples questioned Him about the parable.
18And He said~* to them, “Are you so lacking in understanding also?
Do you not understand that whatever goes into the man from outside cannot defile him, 19because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, and is eliminated?” (/Thus He/ declared all foods clean.)
20And He was saying, “That which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man.
21“For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, 22deeds of coveting /and/ wickedness, /as well/ /as/ deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride /and/ foolishness.
23“All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man.”
*Here Jesus rescinds the ritual in favor of the heart*

Mark chapter 1 introduces us to Jesus and His Old Covenant role fulfilling the prophecies of the Old Testament.
In chapter 2, Mark tells us that Jesus was in Capernaum Verse 8-11 8Immediately Jesus, aware in His spirit that they were reasoning that way within themselves, said~* to them, “Why are you reasoning about these things in your hearts?
9“Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven’; or to say, ‘Get up, and pick up your pallet and walk’?
10“But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—He said~* to the paralytic, 11“I say to you, get up, pick up your pallet and go home.”
16When the scribes of the Pharisees saw that He was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they said to His disciples, “Why is He eating and drinking with tax collectors and sinners?” 17And hearing /this/, Jesus said~* to them, “/it/ /is/ not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
“Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”
19And Jesus said to them, “While the bridegroom is with them, the attendants of the bridegroom cannot fast, can they?
So long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.
20“But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day.
21“No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; otherwise the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear results.
22“No one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost and the skins /as well/; but /one puts/ new wine into fresh wineskins.”
/ /24The Pharisees were saying to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” 25And He said~* to them, “Have you never read what David did when he was in need and he and his companions became hungry; 26how he entered the house of God in the time of Abiathar /the/ high priest, and ate the consecrated bread, which is not lawful for /anyone/ to eat except the priests, and he also gave it to those who were with him?”
27Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.
28“So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
Now in chapter 3, Mark tells us,
1He entered again into a synagogue; and a man was there whose hand was withered.
2They were watching Him /to see/ if He would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse Him.
3He said~* to the man with the withered hand, “Get up and come forward!” 4And He said~* to them, “Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save a life or to kill?”
But they kept silent.
5After looking around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, He said~* to the man, “Stretch out your hand.”
And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored.
6The Pharisees went out and immediately /began/ conspiring with the Herodians against Him, /as/ /to/ how they might destroy Him.
Mark 7 1The Pharisees and some of the scribes gathered around Him when they had come from Jerusalem, 2and had seen that some of His disciples were eating their bread with impure hands, that is, unwashed.
