Hey, we're on God's track and it's all good now!

We were arrested, but even the leaders of Israel, the very men who killed Jesus, can't mess with us!

 

Life is good.

*Acts 5:17&18 ~~* But the high priest rose up, (NRSV: took action) along with all his associates (that is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy (KJV: indignation).

They laid hands on *the apostles* and put them in a public jail.

NRSV: took action, implied, but not literal, it's a translators choice.

KJV: indignation, means offended or angry, but not necessarily because of envy, so jealousy is better.

*the apostles *- all of them?

Tithe, gave up stuff, behavior maybe even friends, what happens?

I was beat down, I surrendered to you Lord, but I'm still getting hammered.

Now, it's *even worse because I didn't expect* it.

*Exodus 12:39 ~~* With the dough they had brought from Egypt, they baked cakes of unleavened bread.

The dough was without yeast because they had been driven out of Egypt and did not have time to prepare food for themselves.

*Exodus 13:21&22 ~~* By day the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night.

Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people.

Where did God drive them?

To a trap at the Red Sea, to bitter water they couldn't drink, to a so-called promised land full of giants.

*Mark 1:11-13a ~~* and a voice came out of the heavens: “You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.”

Immediately the Spirit impelled Him /to/ /go/ out into the wilderness.

And He was in the wilderness forty days being tempted by Satan.

impelled, cast Him out into the desert - drove Him.

Our friend said he would serve God and God got him out of jail… So he could go to prison.

God I told You I would serve You, that I wanted your perfect Will.

God said it is My perfect *Will that you serve Me in prison*.

*Acts 5:19-21a ~~* But during the night an *angel *of the Lord opened the gates of the prison, and taking them out he said, “*Go, stand and speak* to the people in the temple the whole message of this Life.”

Upon hearing /this,/ they entered into the temple about daybreak and /began/ to teach.

Ok, getting thrown in jail for the second time seems bad, but obviously these  so-called leaders have no power to hurt us.

*Go, stand and speak *- yeah, we can do that.

*Acts 5:21a-26 ~~* Now when the high priest and his associates came, they called the Council together, even all the Senate of the sons of Israel, and sent /orders/ to the prison house for them to be brought.

But the officers who came did not find them in the prison; and they returned and reported back, saying, “We found the prison house locked quite securely and the guards standing at the doors; but when we had opened up, we found no one inside.”

Now when the captain of the temple /guard/ and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them as to what would come of this.

But someone came and reported to them, “The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people!”

Then the captain went along with the officers and /proceeded/ to bring them /back/ without violence (for they were afraid of the people, that they might be stoned).

*Acts 5:27-32 ~~* When they had brought them, they stood them before the Council.

The high priest questioned them, saying, “We gave you strict orders not to continue teaching in this name, and yet, you have filled Jerusalem with your *teaching* and intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.”

But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must (KJV:ought to) obey God rather than men.

“The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you had put to death by hanging Him on a cross (KJV: tree).

And he said to them, “Men of Israel, take care what you propose to do with these men.

“For some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and a group of about four hundred men joined up with him.

But he was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing.

“After this man, Judas of Galilee rose up in the days of the census and drew away /some/ people after him; he too perished, and all those who followed him were scattered.

“So in the present case, I say to you, stay away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or action is of men, it will be overthrown; but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them; or else you may even be found fighting against God.”

 

(KJV: took counsel) Past of *bouleu>w*, "deliberate or consider" as opposed to the more probable *bou>lomai*, "desire or intend."

(KJV: doctor) *nomodida>skalov*, same thing.

*Gamaliel*, Hebrew, Gahm-lih-yeal "God is my reward."

Greek, Gamalih>l, now, gemā´lēel.

Grandson of the Babylonian Jew, Hillel, the founder of the Pharisaic school and Rabbinic Judaism.

Gamaliel is the first to be called master and taught Paul.

Through early Church documents there is the tradition that he became a Christian, but stayed in the Sanhedrin to help along with others like Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus.

Hillel was in the Sanhedrin at the time of Jesus' birth and Gamaliel at the time of His death, He died in 52.

 

*Acts 5:40-42 ~~* They took his advice; and after calling the apostles in, they *flogged* (KJV: beaten) them and ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and /then/ released them.

So they went on their way from the presence of the Council, *rejoicing* that they had been considered *worthy to suffer* shame for /His/ name.

And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they *kept right on teaching and preaching* Jesus /as/ the Christ.

You are dead in the middle of God's Will, so much so that you are flayed open with a whip and then you deal with bickering in the church…IMAGINE THAT!
