PREPARE (1:1-3)

prepare the way for Jesus God is going to bring a messenger
He quotes form Isa. and Mal.
Malachi 3:1 NASB95
“Behold, I am going to send My messenger, and he will clear the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple; and the messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight, behold, He is coming,” says the Lord of hosts.
which connects to
Malachi 4:5 NASB95
“Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord.
Mark 9:13 NASB95
“But I say to you that Elijah has indeed come, and they did to him whatever they wished, just as it is written of him.”
I think he uses Mal. to explain what he is going to quote from
Isa. 40:3
Isaiah 40:3 NASB95
A voice is calling, “Clear the way for the Lord in the wilderness; Make smooth in the desert a highway for our God.
3 parts of Isa. v. 9-11
Isa. 42:1
Isaiah 42:1 NASB95
“Behold, My Servant, whom I uphold; My chosen one in whom My soul delights. I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the nations.
baptism by John v. 14-15 gospel of God - the time is fulfilled - the kingdom of God is at hand so repent and believe the gospel
Isaiah 52:7 NASB95 How lovely on the mountains Are the feet of him who brings good news, Who announces peace And brings good news of happiness, Who announces salvation, And says to Zion, “Your God reigns!”
to prepare the way
proclaim His coming
Make his way straight - immediately - the coming and timing is happening immediately

THE WAY TO PREPARE: REPENTANCE (1:4-6)

preaching:
baptism of repentance
for the forgiveness of sins - into the forgiveness of sins
Acts 2:38 NASB95
Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
confession of sins - why confess if their sins had already been forgiven
baptized by Him in the Jordan river

PREPARING OTHERS: POINTING TO CHRIST (1:7-8)

outward focus he was teaching and leading others to Christ
John was a living protest against all selfishness and indulgence and his life was dedicated to pointing to Jesus
humble servant/disciple was willing to render the entirety of his life in service to Jesus

HOW CHRIST PREPARED (1:9-13)

by His baptism - Matt. 3:13-17 says he was baptized to fulfill all righteousness

by His receiving of the Holy Spirit

this was the fulfillment of
Isaiah 42:1 NASB95
“Behold, My Servant, whom I uphold; My chosen one in whom My soul delights. I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the nations.
v. 10 is from Jesus perspective - not He saw, He Heard
words of reassurance - you are my beloved Son in You I am well-pleased
God is always pleased with freely given obedience

by enduring temptation & not yielding

the Spirit compels Him to go into the wilderness
being tempted - throughout the forty days. Luke confirms this in Chapter 3:13 he left him until an opportune time
its amazing how the valleys of temptation and despair are so close to the peaks of life
By His voluntary submission to baptism and voluntary obedience when tempted
by Satan, Jesus, as the last Adam (1 Cor 15:45), overcame the test the first
Adam failed.
Jesus is now ready to begin His ministry of:
Teaching,
Preaching,
Healing,
Casting out demons,
Suffering and
Dying for the lost sheep.
APPLICATION:
We need to prepare ourselves to be good disciples of Our Lord Jesus Christ
understand that we have an obligation or command if you will to prepare
Mark 8:34–38 NASB95
And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul? “For what will a man give in exchange for his soul? “For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”
that's a lifetime commitment of following and denying ourselves
secondly we need to to be a disciple we must submit to Jesus through baptism, repentance and confession
follow in the footsteps of jesus - endure temptation
thirdly, we need to be preparing others and pointing them to Jesus
Mk. 16:15
Mark 16:15 NASB95
And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.
Mark emphasizes discipleship in His Gospel
and he especially notes 12 unlikely disciples in who do what disciples should do but often do not
