Hello and welcome back to our devotions through the gospel of John. Last time we looked at Jesus calling his disciples and noticed that as we follow Jesus it should compel us to bring others to him. Today we are going to look at a somewhat familiar story and it is when Jesus turns water into wine.
John 2:1–11 KJV 1900
And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it. When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now. This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

This story takes place about 3 days after Jesus meeting Nathaniel.

disciples would have travelled with Christ to Cana with Jesus. They were in a position to spend alot of time with Jesus and not miss much of his life. They followed him when he was ministering and teaching but they also followed him when he went places that would seem not important to his ministry.

Why was it important to not run our of wine?

We first want to start here simply because it will make this miracle seem a little less out of place. Wedding feasts could last many days at times and it was the responsibility of finance belonged to the groom. To run out of wine during this celebration brought great shame to the groom, so much that there could be legal actions brought against him.

This was in a shame honour culture.

In America it is hard to understand the though of shame like what would have come on this groom. Let me put it this way though to them shame was like being guilty is to us. This means that he was guilty as if a crime if they were to run out of wine. So this was not simply an end to the party but carried a great deal of weight for the groom.

Mary comes to Jesus knowing he could help

notice as Mary came to Jesus she had complete faith that he could and would solve the problem. When Jesus say Women what have i to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come he was not being rude or disrespectful he was simply transitioning from child and provider she had to the purpose to which God the Father had called him.
She tells the servants to do whatever Jesus says. Jesus has them fill waterpots with water and then begin to draw it out to serve to the guests. I want you to think what could have gone through some of their minds. They just filled the water what if the guests know?

What Jesus Made was better than what they had before.

I would say Jesus turned the water into wine because he saw a physical need. We see consistantly through his life Jesus would meet physical needs/sickness and spared people from much heartache.
The wine that Jesus produced however was better than the wine purchased by the groom. It kind of shows that anything Jesus does will always be better than what we can do on our own.

We also see by turning water to wine it gave Jesus Glory and brought his disciples closer

Jesus making water wine truly showed the disciples he had power from God over the things of this world. The little doubt they may of had at this time was quickly removed when they saw the impossible from the hands of Jesus.
I would like to encourage you in this, whatever situation you are in that seems to big for you to fix is simple for Jesus. If you are saved he has removed your sin which is greater than any need you face today. If Jesus is big enough for the spiritual he is more than enough for the physical. We much like marry know who to turn to we often just dont make him our first choice. Be encouraged in knowing that Jesus cares about you and is willing to provide things in ways you would never imagine. The groom and servants would have never thought Jesus would take water and make better wine that what the groom had originally purchased. Let Christ solve your problems, but remember to give him all the glory once he does.
