Apostles’ Creed
What makes our understanding of God different than the other monotheistic faiths?
We believe in the full divinity of the Trinity
Father - Creator of heaven and earth
Son - Jesus Christ our Lord
Holy Spirit
So let’s jump into the scripture and then let’s dive into what it means to believe - fully trust and rely upon - the Holy Spirit
READ John 16:4-15
John 16:4–15 ESV
But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you. “I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
PRAY
let’s clear somethings up
Holy Spirit is HE not IT
Holy Spirit is no less than God
OT - The Spirit of God not a spirit from God
Ruach
paraclete - Great comforter
God on earth now
Holy Spirit is not created
Genesis 1 - The Spirit hovered over the water
The trinity is a divine mystery that we will never know fully on this side
What does the Word say about the Holy Spirit
He is the Spirit of Truth
The Spirit of Power
Romans 8:11 - The Holy Spirit raised Jesus from the dead
Romans 8:11 ESV
If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
Testifies to Jesus
The Bible is Inspired by God
Inspire means breathed out
The Ruach… the breath of God crafted the truth of this book and then illuminates that truth in the hearts of those who are open and surrendered
Does not speak on his own authority
Jesus, as God, demonstrated obedience in submitting to the will of the Father
Holy Spirit does the same thing. Testifies to Jesus
Jesus said that it is better that he went back to sit at the right hand of the father
Jesus was confined to a location
The Holy Spirit acts in and throughout the world at all times. Drawing and wooing and intervening and acting
God’s prevenient Grace is the Spirit moving drawing people to the name of Christ
When I asked what makes our faith different
We fully believe that God the father almighty created heaven and earth
Jesus is the only son of the living God - God incarnate - The image of the invisible God came to take our punishment
God the Holy Spirit applied the salvation to our account
God the Spirit dwells inside us to lead us into all truth, to teach us, to guide us, to sanctify us - that is to continue to make us into the image of Jesus
What makes our believe different is that we know God didn’t drop us off and tell us to earn our way back
Before the foundations of the earth God’s plan was to take our punishment. While we were yet sinners Jesus Christ chose to die for you, and before you even knew it, The Spirit was wooing you to accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior
We understand that it is not by my own merits that I get to call God my father
It is not by my own power that I am saved
But by the power of the Holy Sprit working in and on me
God does it… and all we do is accept it. What we do is rest and believe the truth of scripture as testified by the Holy Spirit in our lives
