The presence of the Lord in Jerusalem and the presence of the Lord with New Testament believers reminds us that we cannot be moved because God fights for us. Whether natural disaster (v. 2-3) or human enemy (v. 4-10) our job is to wait and trust in the power of our God. (v. 10) Psalm 46 – Be Still and Know Your Mighty Fortress. Ross: In this so-called “Song Of Zion” God’s people confidently affirm that they are secure because the great warrior-king dwells within Jerusalem and protects it from the nations that cause such chaos in the earth. A refrain (vv. 7, 11) concludes the song’s two major sections. This Psalm has been nicknamed the Martin Luther Psalm because he derived the great hymn, A Mighty Fortress is our God, from this Psalm. Author: Korahites (Plural) Structure: A strophe Psalm Questions 1) How is God a refuge in this Psalm? How are we to respond to suffering? 2) What does this teach about God’s power over natural disaster (v. 2-3) and the enemies of God’s people. (v. 4-10)? 3 What does be still and know God look like? In what ways are to be still and in what ways are to honor the Lord in doing right? What are we to know and how does shape our response to suffering? I. The people of God are confident of protection from Natural disaster. (Ps 46:1–3) A. God is their help and refuge in trouble. (1). B. For this reason they do not fear the power of the Natural world (2–3). II. The people of God are confident of protection from invading armies. (Ps 46:4–7) A. The city is secure because God’s presence (5). B. God destroys the enemies that rage against them (6). C. Refrain: The LORD is with his people as their protection (7). III. The people are invited to observe God’s protection of His People. (Ps 46:8–11) A. The people are invited to observe the mighty works of God (8–9). B. The people are called to trust in God who declares that he will be exalted among the nations (10). C. Refrain: The LORD is with his people as their protection (11).
