HOOK

Jesus told the Samaritan woman to call her husband— she said she doesn’t have one. Jesus said, “yeah right!” You have had 5 husbands and the one she was with at that moment was not even her husband
Apparently, she doesn’t want to talk about herself, so she changed the topic to “worship”— and from that conversation we learned these timeless principles:
It is not where we worship— it is who we worship— WE CAN WORSHIP WHEREVER
Believing is one thing— knowing is another thing— WE SHALL NOT JUST KEEP ON BELIEVING HIM, WE SHALL KEEP ON KNOWING HIM
That we must worship Jesus in Spirit and in truth— emotionally and doctrinally— heart and head
Today let’s pick it up from verse 27

BOOK

John 4:27–38 NIV
27 Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?” 28 Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?” 30 They came out of the town and made their way toward him. 31 Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi, eat something.” 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.” 33 Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?” 34 “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. 35 Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. 36 Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. 37 Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true. 38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”
While the Samaritan woman has gone back to her village— conversation between Jesus and his disciples ensued
The disciples wondered why was he not hungry— they thought somebody might have brought him food
Let’s take closer look what happened at the village while gleaning also at the conversation between Jesus and his disciples

LOOK

COME AND SEE A MAN WHO TOLD ME EVERYTHING I EVER DID
V. 29
Amazed as she was for Jesus was able to tell her about her deeds— she told her people about her encounter
She wasn’t sure if Jesus was actually the Messiah— but she told them to come anyway— so the people went to see Jesus
While all these are taking place— Jesus had a conversation with his disciples about food, ripe field, harvesting crops
Once again, Jesus was making use of earthly things to convey spiritual truth— but just like the Samaritan woman— the disciples mistakenly took his words words literally— here’s another passage that teaches us not to take everything literally— those things that was said spiritually—
Jesus loved using metaphors— Jesus uses tangible physical things to teach intangible spiritual truths
OPEN YOUR EYES AND LOOK AT THE FIELDS! THEY ARE RIPE FOR HARVEST
V. 35
Jesus was definitely talking about real crops to harvest— he was talking about souls to save!
Jesus may be alluding to the imminent encounter with the Samaritans who will believe in Him
ONE SOWS AND ANOTHER REAPS
V. 37
The sowing was the expectation of the prophet laid out in Deuteronomy 18:18— reaping will be the belief of the Samaritans
Jesus emphasizes that it’s not always the one who first tells someone about salvation [as the prophets has done for the Samaritans] who brings them to belief
But often it’s those who come later— no matter who reaps, God alone deserves the credit

TOOK | TAKE-AWAY!

I WILL TELL PEOPLE ABOUT JESUS
Although Jesus didn’t say to the Samaritan woman to tell her people about him— she did tell her people
After resurrection, Jesus told his disciples to preach the gospel to all creation— essentially Jesus told them to tell people abou him [Mark 16:15]
I WIL PRAY AND LOOK AROUND FOR OPPORTUNITIES TO BRING PEOPLE TO CHRIST
People are more receptive to the Gospel and when they are under a lot of “tension”, or when they are “in transition”
This crisis is a time of great uncertainty— people are looking for hope and security— last Sunday I said in my sermon that the greater majority of people are looking for hope and security at wrong places— like Mary Magdalene
Speaking of opportunity [favorable juncture | Greek— Kairos]— this is what Paul said to the church in Colosae— [Colossians 4:2-6]
