IT IS THURSDAY

THE NIGHT BEFORE JESUS DEATH
THE NIGHT OF JESUS’ BETRAYAL
AND ON HIS LAST NIGHT, JESUS DECIDES TO DO SOMETHING SPECIAL
LET’S TURN TO MATTHEW 26
Matthew 26:17–29 NKJV
17 Now on the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?” 18 And He said, “Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “My time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at your house with My disciples.” ’ ” 19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover. 20 When evening had come, He sat down with the twelve. 21 Now as they were eating, He said, “Assuredly, I say to you, one of you will betray Me.” 22 And they were exceedingly sorrowful, and each of them began to say to Him, “Lord, is it I?” 23 He answered and said, “He who dipped his hand with Me in the dish will betray Me. 24 The Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.” 25 Then Judas, who was betraying Him, answered and said, “Rabbi, is it I?” He said to him, “You have said it.” 26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” 27 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. 29 But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.”
PRAY
Matthew 26:17 NKJV
Now on the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?”
NOW THAT EVERYONE HAD PURCHASED ALL OF THE NECESSARY INGREDIENTS FOR THE PASSOVER
IT WAS PREPARATION DAY
THE FIRST DAY OF THE FEAST OF UNLEAVENED BREAD
The Disciples knew the importance of this feast
So they ask Jesus where He would like for Passover to be prepared at?
Matthew 26:18–19 NKJV
And He said, “Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “My time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at your house with My disciples.” ’ ” So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover.
IMAGE BEING A JEW IN JERUSALEM
YOU’VE HEARD THE RUMORS THAT A SO CALLED MESSIAH WAS USHERED INTO THE CITY LOWLY RIDING A DONKEY
YOU’VE HEARD ALL OF THE DRAMA AS THE RELIGIOUS LEADERS CONFRONTED JESUS
YOU EVEN HEARD THAT THIS JESUS WAS SPEAKING OF A SOON COMING JUDGEMENT DAY
AS YOU ARE GETTING THINGS READY FOR PASSOVER
A FEW GUYS KNOCK ON YOUR DOOR AND THEY HAVE A MESSAGE FOR YOU
‘The Teacher says, “My time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at your house with My disciples.”
WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
HOW WOULD YOU RESPOND?
I LOVE HOW THE GOSPEL OF MARK PAINTS THE PICTURE
Mark 14:13–16 NKJV
And He sent out two of His disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him. Wherever he goes in, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’ Then he will show you a large upper room, furnished and prepared; there make ready for us.” So His disciples went out, and came into the city, and found it just as He had said to them; and they prepared the Passover.
I LOVE THAT
I love that the question that the disciples had was answered with clear instructions
And as the disciples applied Jesus’ instruction
They walked in the good works that God had prepared beforehand.
HOW MANY OF US HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT LIFE TODAY?
HOW MANY OF US NEED CLARITY TODAY?
HOW WE WILL DO THIS?
HOW WE WILL OVERCOME?
HOW CAN WE HAVE PEACE?
These are the questions that I’ve asked myself over the last three weeks.
Over and Over, I am comforted by things that Jesus said
John 16:33 NKJV
These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
When Trials and Tribulations come
Jesus presents himself as the source of peace
Jesus presents himself as the source of joy
Jesus presents himself as the conqueror of all that the world throws at the believer.
I LOVE WHAT THE PSALMIST SAID
Psalm 46:1–2 NKJV
God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, Even though the earth be removed, And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
THAT CHAPTER ALSO ENDS WITH
Psalm 46:10–11 NKJV
Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah
HERE GOD PRESENTS HIMSELF AS A PLACE OF SAFETY
A PLACE TO TAKE OUR ANXIETIES AND DOWNCAST SOUL
HE IS OUR STRENGTH
HE IS A VERY PRESENT HELP IN TIME OF NEED
HE IS THE TRUTH THAT ENCOURAGES US NOT TO FEAR
BUT EVEN WHEN WE FEAR, OUR FEARS HE RELIEVES.
ALL HE ASKS IS FOR US TO BE STILL AND TO ACKNOWLEDGE WHO HE IS
Be Still and Know that He is God
Be still and know what He has done
Be still and know that His promises are true
Be still and know that He is the same yesterday and forever
He is with us
He is our refuge
He is a strong tower, those who believe in him run to him and are safe.
THE DISCIPLES HAD TRAINED THEMSELVES TO FOLLOW DIRECTIONS
THEY HAD COME TO GRIPS WITH THE FACT THAT JESUS KNEW BETTER
IT WAS THE LITTLE STEPS OF OBEDIENCE THAT LED TO INCREASED FAITH IN WHO HE WAS
IN THE MARK 14:13-16 OF LIFE THERE IS ADVENTURE.
BUT THERE ARE SOME WHO CHOSE A DIFFERENT TYPE OF ADVENTURE
Matthew 26:20–22 NKJV
When evening had come, He sat down with the twelve. Now as they were eating, He said, “Assuredly, I say to you, one of you will betray Me.” And they were exceedingly sorrowful, and each of them began to say to Him, “Lord, is it I?”
IN THE CALM OF THE PASSOVER MEAL
JESUS DROPS A BOMB ON HIS SQUAD
One of His team members
Who had been with Him since the beginning
One who had been chosen to be part of the 12
One who had been entrusted with the Treasury of Ministry
One who had seen all of the miracles happen before his eyes
One who had been taught, cared for, and loved by the Son of God
Chose to betray his Teacher
AN INTERESTING TO NOTE IS HOW THE OTHERS REACTED
They were humble enough to believe that it could have been them
It burdened them to know that one who had been there amongst them would betray Jesus
They were extremely sorrowful
FRIENDS, THIS SHOULD BE OUR REACTION WHEN SOMEONE DEPARTS FROM THE FAITH
We should mourn
We should be sorrowful
But we should also take into consideration that we too have the same proclivity.
2 Peter 3:17 NKJV
You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked;
Galatians 6:1 NKJV
Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.
JESUS IN HIS GENTLENESS UNVEILS WHO IT IS
HE SAYS:
Matthew 26:23–25 NKJV
He answered and said, “He who dipped his hand with Me in the dish will betray Me. The Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.” Then Judas, who was betraying Him, answered and said, “Rabbi, is it I?” He said to him, “You have said it.”
IN STATING THE BEHAVIOR
JESUS IS MAGNIFYING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HIM AND HIS BETRAYER
HIM WHO DIPPED HIS HAND WITH ME IN THE DISH”
SPEAKS OF INTIMACY
SPEAKS OF COMMUNITY
SPEAKS OF DEEP FREINDSHIP
IN THE END, JESUS WAS OK WITH THIS TURN OF EVENTS
HE KNEW IT WAS A FULFILLMENT OF THE SCRIPTURES
Psalm 41:9 NKJV
Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, Who ate my bread, Has lifted up his heel against me.
AS JUDAS EXITED
JESUS TAKES THE REMAINING DISICPLES DEEPER
Matthew 26:26–30 NKJV
And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.” And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
THIS WAS IT
THIS IS THE LAST SIGN JESUS GAVE TO HIS DISCIPLES
THIS HAS BECOME A HOLY SACRAMENT FOR US TO PARTAKE IN
IT IS HOW WE CONFIRM AND ALIGN OURSELVES WITH WHAT JESUS HAS DONE FOR US
IN TAKING THE BREAD AND THE CUP WE AFFIRM A COUPLE THINGS:
THAT HIS BODY WAS BROKEN FOR US
THAT ON THAT CROSS
ACCOUNTS WERE SETTLED
THE PRICE WAS PAID IN FULL
WE ALSO CONFIRM THAT HIS BLOOD WAS SHED TO APPEASE THE DEBT OF OUR SIN
THOUGH BLOOD FLOOD IN CRIMSON FORM
OUR SINS WERE BEING MADE WITH AS SNOW
A SINLESS PERSON KILLED ON BEHALF OF SINFUL HUMANITY
THIS IS WHAT WE SAY WHEN WE TAKE COMMUNION
FRIENDS, THIS IS NOT JUST A SETTLING OF DEBT.
THIS IS A PROCLAMATION OF FREEDOM
FREEDOM TO LIVE IN LIGHT OF WHAT JESUS HAS DONE
CHURCH WHAT JESUS DID ON THE CROSS BY GIVING HIS LIFE FOR US WASN’T JUST A SETTLING OF DEBT
HE DOESN’T LOOK AT US AND SAY:
Here you go, you owe nothing
HE LOOKS AT US
HE SETTLES OUR DEBT
AND SAYS NOW:
NOW WE CAN HAVE A RELATIONSHIP
NOW WE CAN GO DEEPER
NOW WE CAN BE IN COMMUNITY
ITS NOT JUST CLEMENCY
ITS LOVE
