Introduction:
1. The greatest hope of the world came to earth.
5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.
2. The greatest hope of the world came to save the world.
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
3. The greatest hope of the world came to learn obedience.
8 though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered.
Body:
1. The greatest hope of the world is the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ.
3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve. 6 After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain to the present, but some have fallen asleep. 7 After that He was seen by James, then by all the apostles.
A. Why is He our only hope.
1. It is because we have all sinned and there is no way for us to atone for that sin on our own.
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
A. We have no answer for this problem because the wages of sin is death.
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
B. The law of Moses had no answer for sin.
1 For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect. 2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins. 3 But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. 4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.
2. If Christ is not risen our faith is futile.
17 And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins!
A. If Christ is not risen then we have no hope.
19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable.
B. Because Christ is risen we all have hope.
1. He is the hope of those that have fallen asleep.
20 But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead.
2. He is the hope of all that live.
22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. 23 But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming.
Conclusion:
1. He is the hope of the world because he has put all enemies under His feet.
24 Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. 25 For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet.
2. Christ is our hope because He has given us the victory.
54 So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” 55 “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?” 56 The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
3. Therefore, because of his death we should abound in the work of the Lord!
58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.
