We’re still on the subject of Gifts of the Spirit. As I said last time there 3 different categories of gifts. You have the Gifts that Say Something or Inspirational Gifts, and that would be Tongues that are to be Interpreted,” the “Interpretation of Tongues,” and “Prophecy.” There are also the “Revelation Gifts” the gifts that reveal something, and those gifts are “The Word of Knowledge,” “The Word of Wisdom,” and “Discerning of Spirits.” The 3rd category is the “Power Gifts” and they are “Faith, that is the special kind of faith, also “The Gifts of Healing” and “The Working of Miracles.” Today we’re going to take up the 2nd gift in the Revelation category, and that would be “The Word of Wisdom.”

     I. 1COR 12:8

              A. This gift, the Word of Wisdom, is similar in some ways to the Gift we covered last week, “The Word of Knowledge.”

                        1. Both of these gifts are just a fragmentary part of God’s Knowledge or His Wisdom.

                                  a. These gifts are sometimes referred to “The Gift of Knowledgeor “The Gift of Wisdom.”

                                           i. But that would refer to total knowledge or total wisdom. We don’t receive total knowledge or total wisdom as a gift of the spirit.

                        2. These gifts are called “The Word of Knowledge” and “The Word of Wisdom.”

                                  a. That would imply to us that we can receive only a fragmentary part of God’s knowledge or wisdom, as a gift of the spirit.

              B. The “Word of Knowledge” is a supernatural revelation by the spirit of God concerning facts in the mind of God, concerning people, places, or things.

                        1. The “Word of Wisdom” is a supernatural revelation by the Spirit of God concerning the will of God.

                        2. Look at 1COR 12:11

                                  a. This gift, as well as all the others, is given to every man as the Spirit wills.

                                           i. Another translation says, “As the Spirit determines.”

ii. The HS determines who he is going to use.

                        3. 1 question that always arises is, “When does the Spirit will?”

                                  a. Doesn’t He will for all to be healed? Why isn’t everyone healed? Why doesn’t He use 1 of the Gifts of the Spirit for them to be healed?

                                  b. Those are all very good questions.

                                  c. God does will for everyone to be healed and set free, but why don’t we see more of the Gifts of the Spirit in operation to accomplish this?

                                d. I have a few answers for you, but I don’t claim to know every thing.

                                           i. 1 reason is that it takes faith to operate in the Gifts of the Spirit. That might be stopping God from moving in this area. We’re not in faith all the time.

ii. In another area, if you read (1COR 11; 12; 13; and 14) You’ll see that 1 of the main themes in these chapters is the Gifts of the Spirit, but the other main themes are “Love and Unity.”

                                                     a. In order for the Gifts of the Spirit to be in operation, we have to be walking in love and in unity with one another.

                                                     b. Faith worketh by Love and so do the Gifts of the Spirit.

                        4. But when is the HS willing to have 1 of the Gifts in operation?

                                  a. That is a very hard question, and I don’t have a real good answer for you.

                                           i. (DEUT 29:29) Says, “The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever.”

ii. Some things have not been revealed to us.

                                  b. We do know that God wants everyone to be whole. And we also know that without faith we can not please God.

                                           i. Maybe God wants us to learn to stand in Faith for ourselves.

                                  c. I can’t have faith for the gifts of the Spirit to be in operation to minister to everyone, because I don’t see that in the Word. I don’t see that as a promise.

                                           i. I have to except that fact that the HS picks who and when at His own discretion.

              C. We said last time that the Word of Knowledge, deals mainly with the past or present, but sometimes it reveals something in the future.

                        1. The Word of Wisdom always deals with the Future, or the present.

                                  a. The definition of the word “Wisdom” is “A wise outlook, plan, or course of action.”

                                           i. I’ve heard it said this way, “To use wisdom is to apply the knowledge you have gained.”

                                          b. If a “Word of Wisdomcomes forth for you, put it to action.

                                           i. A “Word of Wisdom” is always going to give you some kind of instruction.

II. Sometimes people get this gift of the Word of Wisdom confused with simple wisdom.

              A. (JOS 1:8) Says, “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” (KJV)

                        1. Another translation says, “Thou shall make thyself prosperous and thou shalt be able to deal wisely in the affairs of life.”

                                  a. The NASV says, “Then you will act wisely.”

                                  b. There is a wisdom that is gained through the knowledge of God’s Word.

                                           i. But that not a supernatural manifestation.

                        2. Many think Solomon’s wisdom was a manifestation of the Word of Wisdom, but it wasn’t.

                                  a. Solomon’s wisdom was given to him by God.

                                  b. JAMES 1:5

                                           i. God has promised that all of us can have this type of wisdom daily. It’s ours as often as we need it or want it.

ii. But it’s not the super natural manifestation of the Word of Wisdom. We can’t have all wisdom. We can’t see into the future, but God can and there are those times that where we need this supernaturalWord of Wisdom.”

III. Many times the “Word of Knowledgeand the “Word of Wisdomwork together.

              A. We talk about them separately, but most of the time they hand and hand.

                        1. Look at REV 2:1-5

                                  a. Notice that John knew the condition of this church and the 6 other churches.

                                           i. This was a “Word of Knowledge.”

                                  b. But John was also given a “Word of Wisdomfor these same churches.

                                           i. The “Word of Wisdom” was this, “Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works.” (REV 2:5a)

ii. It gave them a direction which was the will of God.

              B. Turn to ACTS 9:10-12

                        1. Just in these 3 Vs we see the “Word of Knowledge” and the “Word of Wisdom.”

                                  a. 1st the Lord said to him in (V 11), “Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and enquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul, of Tarsus.”

                                           i. This told him where to go, Part of God’s plan and His wisdom.

                                  b. Then in (V12) comes the “Word of Knowledge,” which says, “He prayeth, And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight.”

                                           i. This gave Ananias a certain amount of knowledge of what was going on.

              C. Look at ACTS 8:26-29

                        1. God revealed His plan to Philip through an angel.

                                  a. The “Word of Wisdom” was “Arise and go toward the south (V26) and in (V 29) which says, “ Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.”

                        2. If you read on you can see the wisdom of God. This Ethiopian man of great authority got saved through Philip obeying this “Word of Wisdom.”

IV. There are times that the Word of Knowledge and the Word of Wisdom can be conditional.

              A. 2KINGS 20:1-5

                        1. The Word of Wisdom came saying “Set your house in order.”

                                  a. The Word of Knowledge was “you’re going to die.”

                        2. But Hezekiah repented. No longer was he going to die, which was the Word of Knowledge.

                                  a. Now he had a new Word of Wisdom, in (V5) the Lord said, “I will heal thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the LORD.”

                                  b. The old Word of Knowledge and the old Word of Wisdom changed because Hezekiah changed.

              B. We’ll end w/ this last scripture. ACTS 27:9‑11.

                        1. But after they set sail they hit heavy storms.

                        2. V 20‑24

                                  a. This was a Word of Wisdom that came to Paul through an angel.

                                  b. The Word of Wisdom was that Paul must be brought before Caesar. It revealed God’s plan and purpose.
