Intro:

As we discussed at the end of last week, God is a God of fulfilled promises. We spoke about the Prophecy in Isaiah 7 of the Lord being born of a virgin, being fulfilled in Mary conceiving and giving birth to Jesus. We talked about the mode of transport and the people’s acceptance of Jesus during the triumphal entry being a fulfilment of Zechariah and the timing of the event being a fulfilment of Daniel’s prophesy. This morning, we will continue to see that God has kept his promises through the very real events of Easter.

1. Rejection of Christ by His Own People

Prophecy

Isaiah 53:3 KJV 1900

He is despised and rejected of men; A man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: And we hid as it were our faces from him; He was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Fulfillment by Christ

He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

John 12:37–38 KJV 1900

But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him: That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?

I find it a bit odd that Jesus could ride into Jerusalem as a King on the back of a donkey, with all of the people welcoming Him as their king. Crying “Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.” and then within a weeks time, reject Him and condemn Him to death.

If you could put yourself in Jesus’d place for just one second and imagine that you are in the presence of Pilate standing accused and facing death. The normal thing for us to do would be to defend ourselves and whatever we could to change Pilate’s mind. However, this was not the case with Jesus.

2. Jesus was Silent before His Accusers

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, Yet he opened not his mouth: He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, So he openeth not his mouth.

But Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled.

3. The Soldiers Divided His Garments and Cast Lots for His Clothes

Prophecy

Psalm 22:17–18 KJV 1900

I may tell all my bones: They look and stare upon me. They part my garments among them, And cast lots upon my vesture.

Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

This next Prophecy is especially interesting. Not that it is any more important than the others. It was customary during the process of crucifixion that those who were being crucified would have to push up with their legs in order to be able to breath. As the soldiers or the Jews in this case grew impatient, they would break the criminals legs so that they couldn’t lift themselves up to breath anymore and they would suffocate. However:

4. Not One of His Bones Would be Broken

They shall leave none of it unto the morning, nor break any bone of it: according to all the ordinances of the passover they shall keep it.

The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

As we know, Jesus was crucified by the Romans, not stoned to death by the Jews that accused and sentenced Him to death. Normally, the Jews would have killed Jesus on their own, but even though we can’t say exactly why, they delivered Him over to the Romans to be crucified.

5. They Would Pierce His Hands and Feet

I am poured out like water, And all my bones are out of joint: My heart is like wax; It is melted in the midst of my bowels. My strength is dried up like a potsherd; And my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; And thou hast brought me into the dust of death. For dogs have compassed me: The assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: They pierced my hands and my feet.

Fulfillment by Christ

Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.

Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

This next prophesy comes from Isaiah as many of the previous, but this time, we don’t necessarily see the fulfillment in the Gospels. Lets look at Isaiah 53 starting in verse 5.

6. Jesus Will Die as a Sacrifice for Our Sins

But he was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: The chastisement of our peace was upon him; And with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned every one to his own way; And the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

He was taken from prison and from judgment: And who shall declare his generation? For he was cut off out of the land of the living: For the transgression of my people was he stricken.

Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, And he shall divide the spoil with the strong; Because he hath poured out his soul unto death: And he was numbered with the transgressors; And he bare the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.

Like I said, this one is fulfilled and is talked about in 1 Peter 2 saying:

Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

Notice what Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15, “According to the scriptures.” Paul knew the Old Testament through and through being that he was a pharisee of the pharisees. He knew that Isaiah 53 was speaking of Christ, the Messiah. He says

After Christ gave up his Life in Luke 23:46 where the Bible says:

And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.

He needed to be buried before the sun had set according to the Jewish Law. Since Jesus didn’t have a tomb of His own, he needed to be buried in someone else’s. But this is something that we see spoken of back in Isaiah 53:9.

7. Jesus was Buried in a Rich Man's Tomb

And he made his grave with the wicked, And with the rich in his death; Because he had done no violence, Neither was any deceit in his mouth.

Fulfillment by Christ

Matthew 27:57–60 KJV 1900

When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus’ disciple: He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered. And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.

8. Jesus Would Not Stay Buried but Rose from the Dead

Now after Jesus had been in the tomb for 3 days, another fulfilled prophesy by the way, Jesus conquers death and raised from the dead. Psalm 16:10 tells us that

While there are many many passages we can look at, lets look at Matthew 28.

He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

Romans 6:8–11 KJV 1900

Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

9. Christ Would be Seated at the Right Hand of God

Not only was the Death, Burial and Resurrection of Christ Promised back in the Old Testament and fulfilled in Christ, but After His ascension, it was promised that Christ would be seated at the right hand of God.

The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, Until I make thine enemies thy footstool.

Fulfillment by Christ

Hebrews 10:12–13 KJV 1900

But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.

Acts 2:32–36 KJV 1900

This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, Until I make thy foes thy footstool. Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.

So as we have seen, God has promised many things throughout the Old Testament, whether it was the promise made to the patriarchs that Israel would enter and dwell in the promise land as we have discussed for the past few months, or the promises of the coming messiah that were fulfilled in Jesus Christ, God keeps His promises 100% of the time. But so what, All these things happened, how does this apply to me, what can we take away? Well along with those fulfilled promises, we have the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord for all those who call upon His name.

The hope in the Promise

1 Peter 1:3 KJV 1900

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

Titus 1:2 KJV 1900

In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

Hebrews 9:15 KJV 1900

And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.

God promised eternal Life for all who will call upon the name of the Lord.

Romans 10:9–10 KJV 1900

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

You see,

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of God’s Great Redemption Plan. As I mentioned last week, Jesus Christ was and is the Passover Lamb that shed His blood to pay the penalty that your sin debt required, that My sin debt required. He Paid it all so we, who could not make the payment ourselves, could have eternal life with Him. If you have Accepted God’s free gift of salvation through belief in the Lord Jesus Christ alone, Rejoice this Easter Sunday because He IS Risen!

If you haven’t yet done that, If you haven’t confessed that you are a sinner and believed in your heart that Jesus Christ paid the debt your sin requires and trust in His finished work on the cross, I encourage you to do so. Today is the day that you can be saved from eternity separated from God and have Eternal Life with God! Will you do that today?
