Before Easter
We are excited to have you this morning join on Youtube
I pray that you are not becoming comfortable watching us online but that you long as I do to gather together in person as the body
This morning is the Sunday before Easter
Who would have thought that we would be doing an online service the Sunday before Easter
Not me thats for sure
This is Palm Sunday
If you are like me you wanted to know why it is Palm Sunday
Today is the day that Jesus would have come into Jerusalem and they would have laid Palms down for Him to ride in on
This morning we will be looking at the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem
Matthew 21:1 NASB95
1 When they had approached Jerusalem and had come to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples,
This would have been a road they have traveled
Jesus was 33 years old and as a good Jew He would have come to Jerusalem and to this particular festival since it was being pass over
This would have been a comfortable road that He knew and knew well
They were coming for the Pass Over Festival
If you will recall that particular festival was ordained for them as part of coming out of Egypt a long time ago
That the Angel of Death passed over those house holds with blood on their door posts
See the blood of that sacrifice had covered those families and they were spared death
Some of you who have been in church for a while now know where we are headed with those statements this morning
And if you don’t know then you will by the end of this morning
Back to Jesus coming into Jerusalem, Jesus is traveling with the disciples and probably some other people but we know for sure that the disciples are with Him
Matthew 21:2–3 NASB95
2 saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied there and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to Me. 3 “If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and immediately he will send them.”
Jesus sends 2 of His disciples into a village it doesn't say which one but many think possibly Bethphage
Jesus gives them very particular instructions
They are to get a donkey its colt
The colt would not have ridden on is the consensus
The donkey is key though
It wasn’t a horse
It was a Donkey
The riding in on a donkey represented someone coming in peace and not war
Had Jesus ridden in on a horse those people in charge would have taken that as an act of war possibly
Remember those who were looking for a king to come in and save the Jewish people were looking for just that
They were looking for someone to come in and kick the Romans out, they were not looking for Jesus to ride in on a donkey peacefully
Matthew 21:4–5 NASB95
4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: 5 Say to the daughter of Zion, Behold your King is coming to you, Gentle, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’ ”
This was not a spur of the moment thing
This was not just an idea that Jesus had thought of randomly
Just like our current situation did not catch Jesus off guard
Coming into Jerusalem did not catch Jesus off guard
This is what they writer of Matthew was referring to
Zechariah 9:9 NASB95
9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, Humble, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
See from a few hundred years before this happened they knew it was going to be a donkey
They knew that Salvation Himself would come in riding on a donkey
And yet church they still missed it after a week
Hear me this morning all of you
Jesus is going to come back a 2nd time and that will be it
Please do no miss spending eternity in heaven with Jesus because you missed it
Salvation is coming and it is only through Jesus that you and I have salvation
Matthew also is using Isaiah as his reference here
Isaiah 62:11 NASB95
11 Behold, the Lord has proclaimed to the end of the earth, Say to the daughter of Zion, “Lo, your salvation comes; Behold His reward is with Him, and His recompense before Him.”
I absolutely love this verse because it uses the words Salvation
Your Salvation comes
That was the announcement that Jesus was coming
Listen to me here this morning that Jesus came to bring you and I Salvation
That is what we are celebrating this Sunday is that Jesus is the coming Salvation
Notice it is not that salvation through an earthly King, or salvation through the government or salvation through your education, or salvation through your bank account
Church salvation does not even come through church membership or being involved in the church
understand this, I don’t want you to miss this
Salvation is only through Jesus Christ
That is what Palm Sunday is the coming of our Salvation
Matthew 21:6–7 NASB95
6 The disciples went and did just as Jesus had instructed them, 7 and brought the donkey and the colt, and laid their coats on them; and He sat on the coats.
So what do the Disciples do
They go into the place that Jesus told them and the find the donkey and the colt and they bring it back so that Jesus could ride in on the colt
A colt that had never been ridden in on
This is significant because Jesus was riding and coming in as a King
Those who had liked His teaching then begin to give Him their coats to ride on and lay things down that you would do for a king
This is the picture of our coming King and our Coming Salvation
This was not to be a earthly King that would rule over like governments
This was to be an eternal King and more than our King church this is the coming of our Salvation
Do you understand this church I want to make this clear that Salvation only comes through Jesus and no one else
Matthew 21:8–11 NASB95
8 Most of the crowd spread their coats in the road, and others were cutting branches from the trees and spreading them in the road. 9 The crowds going ahead of Him, and those who followed, were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David; Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest!” 10 When He had entered Jerusalem, all the city was stirred, saying, “Who is this?” 11 And the crowds were saying, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth in Galilee.”
People are shouting Hosana Hosana Hosana
It is a Hebrew word that means Save Now
They actually thought that Jesus was going to bring their earthly King and they missed it because
Well same reason you and I miss the things of Jesus because we are so distracted
They begin to share who Jesus is that He is a prophet that is from Galilee
Praise the Lord church our Salvation is coming
You probably know the rest of the story right
Jesus comes in to Jerusalem and then in less than a week those same people who had cried Save Now and Hosana
Had changed their tune
Matthew 27:22–23 NASB95
22 Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Crucify Him!” 23 And he said, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they kept shouting all the more, saying, “Crucify Him!”
In less than a week now they are beginning to scream Crucify Him
They are now wanting to Kill the man that in less than a week prior they had given their own coats for Him to ride on
But again church this did not catch Jesus off guard
Jesus knew this was coming
Matthew 27:45–50 NASB95
45 Now from the sixth hour darkness fell upon all the land until the ninth hour. 46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” 47 And some of those who were standing there, when they heard it, began saying, “This man is calling for Elijah.” 48 Immediately one of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink. 49 But the rest of them said, “Let us see whether Elijah will come to save Him.” 50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.
Jesus is crucified
They had put Jesus to death
They had killed the person who just a few days ago they had thought was coming to save them
They had missed the coming Salvation because they were distracted
I don’t want you to miss it this morning
Jesus is our Salvation
Remember all the way back at the beginning we talked about the Passover
That was a picture of what was to come
Jesus’s blood covers our sin just like the blood covered them in Egypt and the Angel of Death passed over their house
Their Salvation was in the sacrifice of the Lamb
Our Salvation comes through the sacrifice of Jesus
Romans 5:8 NASB95
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Jesus demonstrates His love for us by His death on the cross
This morning we have talked a lot about Salvation and the coming of the salvation because that is what we are celebrating today
The coming of Jesus into Jerusalem was the coming of Salvation Complete
Jesus’s death on the cross covers your sin and my sin
Did you know that you and I are sinners
We horrible mean and nasty people
But Jesus is our Salvation
Praise the Lord for those of you who have already accepted that free gift of Salvation by asking Jesus to be Lord of your Life
Be encouraged church that the God of the universe whom you have a personal relationship with is still in charge
You can rest in the fact that Jesus is still very much in charge even know!
I know we can get so distracted with life and everything that is going on right now but please don’t miss this
For those of you who do not have a personal relationship
please don’t miss salvation this morning
You can begin your personal relationship with Jesus this morning
Romans 10:9–10 NASB95
9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
The Bible calls us to turn from our sin and cry out to Jesus
If that is you this morning would you pray this pray with me this morning
Dear Jesus,
I know that you Love me
I know that you want to save me
Jesus you died to save me
You paid my sin debt with your blood on the cross
Thank you for doing that
Now Lord I open my life up to you
Right now I receive you as my Lord and Master
I turn from my sinful ways and turn to you Lord Jesus
Come into my heart and forgive my sin and Save me Jesus
If you prayed that this morning would you email me and I would love to connect with you and talk to you about that decision
If you have other decisions that you made this morning would you please email those to me also
Please church check your emails regarding church next Sunday
