! I.     Colossians 1:21-23
!! A.  After talking about the seventh characteristic of Christ, Paul then develops the theme of the necessity of reconciliation.
!!! 1.
Why did we need reconciliation?
Because we were alienated and enemies of God.
!!!! a)   The Greek can just as easily render it this way, "We were aliens and enemies with your mind through your evil works."
!!!! b)    Evil works come through your mind.
!!! 2.    The NIV puts it, “Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of  a your evil behavior.
*[1]*
!!!! a)     The foot note to that says, “Were enemies in your minds because of your minds.”
!!!! b)    Greek literal says, “The disposition of your mind was bad or evil works.”
!!! 3.    Eph 4:18
!!!! a)    This litteral says, “There mind was darkened being separated from the Life of God because of ignorance that is in them through the callous covering a sore of (in) their heart.”
!! B.  Go back to COL 1:21
!!! 1.
The last part of the V “yet now hath he reconciled” is really found in most translations including the original Greek in V 22.
!! C.
So let’s read it through as part of V 22. (COL 1:21b – 22)
!!! 1.    Reconciliation of sinners to God is by Christ’s physical body through death,*[2]* as the NIV puts it.
!!! 2.     The Gnostic tendency of the Colossian heresy denied both Christ’s true humanity and His true deity.
!!!! a)    The Gnostic or Gnosticism had to do with elevating knowledge.
Knowledge was more of a God to them.
!!!!! (1)  But these teachers viewed the material order as worthless and the body as a prison for the soul, and they treated illumination as the complete answer to human spiritual need.
They denied that sin was any part of the problem, and the “knowledge” they offered had to do only with spells, celestial passwords, and disciplines of mysticism and detachment.
They reclassified Jesus as a supernatural teacher who had looked human, though he was not; and they denied the Incarnation and the Atonement.
*[3]*
!!!! b)     So, right here Paul is dealing with this error.
(The error that Paul was mainly dealing with here is their denial of Jesus coming in the flesh & that he provided atonement.
!!!! c)     The NIV of V 22 says, “But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation”
!!!!! (1)  Look at 1 John 4:2.
!!!!!! (a)   This was 1 of the ways that they would judge a false prophet.
This was such a problem at the this time.
!!!! d)    Col 1:23
!!!!! (1)  This reconciliation in Christ comes only by an abiding faith— if you continue in your faith.*[4]*
!!!!! (2)  The NIV says, “ if you continue in your faith, established and firm, not moved.”
!!!!! (3)  Notice he says, “CONTINUE”
!!!!!! (a)   They were “ESTABLISHED, FRIM and NOT MOVED” in their faith.
!!!!!! (b)   This sounds like it is possible to lose it.
!!!!!! (c)    We’re going to be “holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: 23 If ye continue…”*[5]*
!
II.
Alright, let’s go on reading COL 1:24-27
!! A.  In V 24 Paul is talking about Christ suffering for us, but he is also talking about our suffering for His, which is the body of Christ.
!!! 1.
There will be persecutions, but there is also a work that has to be done.
!!! 2.    You will not lose your reward.
Even if you give a cup of clod water to someone in thirst, you will not lose your reward.
