! I.     In the /next five or six versus/ we are going to find out several things about the Lord Jesus Christ.
!! A.  Christ is: (1) the image of God, (2) the Firstborn over Creation, (3) Creator of the universe, (4) Head of the church, (5) Firstborn from the dead, (6) the fullness of God, and (7) the Reconciler of all things.

There is no other list in scripture that gives us so many of the characteristics of Christ and his deity.

II.
The fourth characteristic we see comes from VERSE 18 (read)
!! A.  In the FIRST PART of that VERSE it says that “HE IS THE HEAD OF THE BODY, THE CHURCH:”
!!! 1.    Turn to Ephesians 1:22-23, Ephesians 5:23
!!! 2.    We can clearly see that Jesus is the head of the church and we are his body.
!! B. In the last half of VERSE 18 gives us the fifth characteristic, it says, "WHO IS THE BEGINNING, THE FIRSTBORN FROM THE DEAD”

This does not mean the first that was brought back to life from the dead.
!!! 2.    But rather it refers to being raised from the dead that would never die again.
!!! 3.    The first raised from the dead victorious in a glorified body.
!!!! a)    (Revelation 1:5) also tells us that he is the first begotten of the dead.
!!! 4.     Look at Philippians 2:7-9.
!!!! a)    (Philippians 2:7) "Reputation" literally means “Empty Himself.”
!!!! b)    "Form of a servant, likeness of Man" (Phil 2:7)
!!!! c)     (Philippians 2:8) "fashion as a man, humbled himself."
Shows humanity.
!!!! d)    Verse 9 "obedient unto death" "God highly exalted him."
!!!!! (1)  The first man to be raised and exalted.
!!! 5.    Go back to Colossians 1:18, the last half of the verse says, "that in all things he might have the preeminence."
!!!! a)    "Preeminence" literally means "to be number one, to be the first, or "to have supremacy."
!!!! b)    He has the name that is above every other names, and his name every knee show bow, he is the first and the last, the alpha and omega, the beginning and the end.
!! C.  Colossians 1:19 This is our 6th description of Christ.
“In Him should all the fullness dwell.”

This verse is a very important verse in describing the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ.
!!! 2.    The NIV translation says this, "For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him."
!!!! a)    It is only found in Christ that all of God's fullness is found.
(This making him equal to God and coat eternal with God, for he is God."
!!!! b)     This word “Fullness” means “Completeness”.
!!! 3.
This FULL and COMPLETE DEITY DWELLS in Christ.
!! D.  Colossians 1:20 This is our 7th attribute of Christ.
!!! 1.
He is the reconciler of all things.
!!!! a)    The word "RECONCILE" means, "To reconcile back again, bring back a former state of harmony."
!!!! b)    Of course, this is only in reference to those who can be reconciled.
!!!!! (1)  Look at Romans 5:10-11
!!!!! (2)  2 Corinthians 5:17-20
!!! 2.    How did he reconcile us?
Verse 20, "Having made peace through the blood of His cross."
!!!! a)    Ephesians 2:12 says, "That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the Commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the COVENANTS OF PROMISE, having no hope, and without God in the world: (V.
13) but now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far of are made nigh by the blood of Christ."
!!!! b)    And then in Ephesians 2:15 he says that "he hath abolished in his flesh the enmity, so making peace."

III.
Colossians 1:21-23
!! A.  After talking about the seventh characteristic of Christ, Paul then develops the theme of the necessity of reconciliation.
!!! 1.
Why did we need reconciliation?
Because we were alienated and enemies of God.
!!!! a)   The Greek can just as easily render it this way, "We were aliens and enemies with your mind through your evil works."
!!!! b)    Evil works come through your mind.
