1 Peter 2:22–24 NASB95
22 who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth; 23 and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously; 24 and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.
1 Peter 2:22–24 NKJV
22 “Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth”; 23 who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; 24 who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.
1 Peter

WHAT THREE THINGS DOES THE VERSE SAY ABOUT JESUS’ SPEECH.

There was no deceit found in His speech.

Christ kept quite while being led to the cross:

7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, So He did not open His mouth.
Isa
As recorded in scripture much of Jesus speech was spent on teaching:
Matthew 9:35 NASB95

3. What are some ways Jesus used His speech?

Commissioned to preach -
Luke 4:18 NASB95

Matthew 9:35 NASB95
35 Jesus was going through all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness.
Matt

What is the difference between TEACHING and PREACHING?

Teaching INSTRUCTS!
Preaching is intended TO CONVINCE!
Proclaim to declare publicly in a proud way, usually with the idea to insist. Defiant in a way. (John the Baptist had been a proclaimer)

What was John the Baptist proclaiming?

Repentance - turning away from sins.
Matthew 3:2 NASB95
2 “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
2. Baptism - John’s baptism was an expression of his message of repentance.
Mark 3:6 NASB95
6 The Pharisees went out and immediately began conspiring with the Herodians against Him, as to how they might destroy Him.
Mark 3
Matthew 3:11 NASB95
11 “As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
Luke 3:3 NASB95
3 And he came into all the district around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins;
Luke 3
3. The Coming of the Messiah
All four gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.) proclaim that John the baptist was a fulfillment of
Isaiah 4:3 NASB95
3 It will come about that he who is left in Zion and remains in Jerusalem will be called holy—everyone who is recorded for life in Jerusalem.
John 1:23 NASB95
23 He said, “I am a voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”

What was jesus teaching or proclaiming?

The GOSPEL
1 Corinthians 15:3–4 NASB95
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
1 Cor 15:
1 Corinthians 14:3–5 NASB95
3 But one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation. 4 One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but one who prophesies edifies the church. 5 Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy; and greater is one who prophesies than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edifying.
1 COr 14
Later Jesus said:
Matthew 24:14 NASB95
14 “This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.

4. What were other ways Jesus used His speech.

(see bullets at the bottom of page 166.
Jesus showed phenomenal skills in the use of question as a teaching device.
Sometime Jesus warned people about coming difficulties.
Jesus usually answer questions
At time Jesus severely reproached unresponsive people and cities.
Jesus reproached His disciples for their lack of faith.
Jesus denounced the hypocrisy of the Pharisees.
Jesus also gave compliments to people for faith and faithfulness.

Summation about Jesus’s words:

Economical but not timid (showing a lack of courage or confidence.).
Appropriate and perfectly timed.
He gave encouragement when needed.
His words were sharp and straight to the point.
Matthew 12:36 NASB95
36 “But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment.

5. How important is it for you to be careful about the way you speak?

___ Not very important. I’m forgiven. What I do now doesn’t really matter.
___ Very important. God is keeping track of my every careless word, and I will have to give Him an explanation on the day of judgment.
HAVING THE MIND OF CHRIST, WE ARE TO BE CAREFUL AND APPROPRIATE IN OUR USE OF WORDS.

6. Turn to page 239 and review the Lifelong Help of Temperance.

TEMPERANCE - strength, controlling power of the will under the operation of the Spirit of God, self-control, mastery over desires or sensual appetites undisciplined by God.
Romans 6:12 NASB95
12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts,

7. Close today’s session by talking to the Lord. Confess any careless or inappropriate words you recently used that come to mind. Ask God to strengthen you with a Christ-controlled tongue that never dishonors Him.
