I think the greatest words the Lord could hear from our lips are his children saying “I’ll have what your having”
Our prayers should mirror the desires of our Father’s heart.
Paul begins writes to the church in Ephesus building them up with powerful doctrinal truths about their relationship with Christ.
KJV 1900In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
KJV 1900For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
KJV 1900That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
Connecting Verse: the foundation in the church
KJV 1900Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.
Foundational Chapters 1-3 Now in Chapter 4-6 are Functional Chapters
KJV 1900I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,
The word walk is peripateo meaning to walk (behavior)-to live in a specific manner. and the next word qualifies the word worthily- a manner befittingly or deservedly.Not any room for being neutral.
KJV 1900Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;
KJV 1900And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
Same walk used in 4:1. our walk reveals what we believe about something or someone.
KJV 1900Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
All of this is functional understood because of the foundational principles learned in Chapter 1-3. chapter 6 is about the Armor forged by God for you to put on each day for your protection. All of the Armor spoken of until this point has been defensive Belt of Truth Breastplate of righteousnessShoes shod with the preparation of the gospel of peaceShield of Faith Helmet of Salvation
Dr. MacArthur in his New Testament Commentary series say that this passage is referred to as the 4 alls of prayer. four All’s pepper this passage. We see a pattern develop that needs further exploration.
Prayer is so very vital to the believer that Jesus both modeled it in
Mark 1:35 KJV 1900
And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.
that they wanted to mimic it. If Jesus is praying, they recognized how much more important is it that we should pray, was the question they asked themselves.
The disciple realized as Jesus revealed to them how practical prayer is to every situation. ,
Matthew 17:21 KJV 1900
Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.
Prayer is vital to live effectively for God in this present world. Prayer is not a piece of Armor, because it is more important. Prayer is like the spiritual breath we take all the time.
Prayer is vital to live effectively for God in this present world. Prayer is not a piece of Armor, because it is more important. Prayer is like the spiritual breath we take all the time.
Prayer recognizes God’s greatness and our dependence on Him.
The disciples recognized this in asking God
Acts 1:24
Acts 1:24 KJV 1900
And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,
We must recognize this. Think with me for a moment. How many times have you prayed to God this week?
Why did you pray to God?
How did you pray to God?
Paul gives some “Helps” in this passage. I think we would all agree that on a battle field communication is vital for the soldiers.
I. Prayer of Provision
A. Praying always
to pray v. — to address a deity or say a prayer; often to make a request.
Luke 21:36 KJV 1900
Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.
1.This reveals the dependence of the subject upon the master. One has control the other does not. It all depends on who you are going to for help. Are they in a position to help you.
2. The timing leads us to believe it is not a one time occasion. It is routine but can go outside the routine for occasions that demand it. More that just the need of a crisis is a desire to talk and share. Enoch walked with God. I’m sure they had some glorious conversations which were just natural, but Daniel prayed three times of day on a routine.
B.
1 Thessalonians 5:17 KJV 1900
Pray without ceasing.
3. Long prayers, short prayers, public prayers, private prayers the important part is to pray.
4. This is a combination of an attitude and action about prayer you must have both.
B. to always ⇔ through all (time) adv. — at all times; conceived as covering the entire extent (of time).
A. to always ⇔ through all (time) adv. — at all times; conceived as covering the entire extent (of time).
1. Every occasion-
1 Timothy 2:8 KJV 1900
I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.
2. Very Complete- like an oversized blanket that covers everything.
I Timothy 2:18
3. It is all encompassing. This is not necessarily about what you say as to who you say it to. God is in control.
4. It again reveals a readiness that the soldier must be in to have communication lines ready and clear of any other distractions.
5. Devote yourself to prayer. Paul told others to make this time a priority.
Romans 12:12 KJV 1900
Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;
Colossians 4:2 KJV 1900
Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;
C. Paul reiterates in the verse prayer and supplication.
1. Both of these terms have to be recognized.
a. prayer - a request to God is where the prayer is going.
b. petition- the quality of that request is ernest or emergency. The difference between com check and calling for air support because you position is about to be over run.
2. On the battle field as in life none of us live in a vacuum, but live in a world filled with temptation.
II. Prayer for Power vs. 18 “in the Spirit”
A. Praying in the Spirit - The Holy Spirit is praying for us and help us understand what we need to pray for. Power of Discernment.
B. Praying by the Spirit - The Holy Spirit prays with us enabling our prayers to connect. In Computer language it is connecting by the server. Wifi. Power of enable-ment.
Romans 8:15 KJV 1900
For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
Romans 8:26
Romans 8:26 KJV 1900
Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
Galatians 4:6 KJV 1900
And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
III. Prayer for Perseverance vs 18
A. A Warning - Don’t fall asleep. Keep praying in every any type of season.
Matthew 26:41 KJV 1900
Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
B. A Watching
1. To watch is to be alert. Not to fall asleep. I have on occasion had to travel long distance and there is a fear of falling sleep behind the wheel.
2. A soldier especially on guard cannot afford to fall asleep. Many drop their guard on holidays or vacation or they feel they are due some time of their own.
Mark 13:33 KJV 1900
Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.
Mark 13:33
Be aware and be sure to Honor God when He answers your prayer
Be aware that “no” is an answer.
Acts 2:42 KJV 1900
And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
IV. Prayer for People vs 18
A. Pray for others.
1. Great time to exercise he gift of prayer on behalf of others. People need your prayers. Our country is in difficulty with medical crisis and also financial problems.
2. We suffer when one of us suffers. We rejoice when one of us are doing well. Pray for the Masih family. Mr. Masih has Covid 19.
B. People pray for you.
1. Have others pray for you. Enlist some that are prayer warriors that will have your back as you go forward.
2. We need the help on the battle field of life. I have had those that are praying for me.
Someone once said
Begin the day with God,
Kneel down to Him in prayer,
Lift up thine heart to His abode,
and seek His love to share.
Open the book of God,
and read a portion there,
That many hallow all thy thoughts,
And sweeten all they care.
God through the day with God’
Whate’er thy work may be;
Whate’er thou art, at home, abroad,
He still is near to thee.
Converse in thy mind with God;
Thy spirit heavenward raise,
Acknowledge ever good bestowed,
And offer grateful praise.
Conclude the day with God;
Thy sins to Him confess,
Trust in the Lord’s atoning blood,
And plead His righteousness.
And
