Sermon Tone Analysis

*I.*

In this *V* that we just read (*HEB 8:6*) Who is *Paul referring to*? *Who is* the *Mediator* of this *better covenant*?

Of course, the answer is *Jesus*.

Jesus is the mediator of this better covenant which has been *established* upon *better promises*.

*A.*

In the Bible we have *2 major covenants*.

The *Old* Covenant *and* the *New* Covenant or as the *Bible puts it* the *Old Testament and* the *New Testament*.

(Same thing)

                        *1.*

A *covenant is an agreement or a contract between 2 people or 2 groups of people*.

A covenant is a contract *between 2 parties*.

*2.*

In the *Blood Covenant*, which we're *dealing with*, is *a contract in which all debts*, *liabilities*, & *assets are shared* by *both parties* or groups.

*B.*

*God has entered into a covenant relationship with mankind*.

*1.*

*All* that *God owes* & *all that God owns is ours*, and *all* that *we owe & all* that *we own is His*.

(*1COR 6:20*) Says that we are *bought with a price*, & that price was the shed Blood of Jesus.

*            C.*

The *Hebrew word for* “*covenant*” is “*Berith*” (ber-eeth) & it means “*to cut in reference to the flesh*.”

*1.*

It *also means to cut until blood flows*.

*2.*

*God has made a contract*, a *covenant*, *with man* which is *sealed with Blood*, *settled with the Blood of Jesus* — His Blood flowed on our behalf.

(Which is the New Covenant)

        *II.*

The *Blood Covenant* is a *very sacred* Covenant.

It is the *most sacred Covenant* that *mankind* has* ever known*.

*A.*

*Dr.

Livingston* & *Mr.

Stanley* were *missionaries in Africa* for many years.

*1.* *Blood covenants* were very *common in Africa*.

*a.* *In all that time* that they were there they *never heard of a blood covenant being broken* between 2 men.

*b.*

Mr. *Stanley entered into covenants with* at least *50* different African *tribes*.

*i.*

He had to *cut himself 50 times* until blood flowed.

*ii.*

These *scars* were *purposely kept visible*.

*iii.*

Every time *someone wanted to kill* Mr. Stanley, he would *show* him his *scars*.

*2.*

You see, when you enter into a covenant with someone, not only does their possessions belong to you but it *also meant* that they would *even fight to the death for you if necessary*

I'm so glad that *we have a covenant with God*.

*b.* (*2CHRON 20:15,17*) Says, “Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the Lord unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle {is} not yours, but God's.

(17) Ye shall not {need} to fight in this {battle}: set yourselves, stand ye {still}, and see the salvation of the Lord with you.”

David said in (*1SAM 17:47*) “For the battle is the Lord's”

        *III*.

The *Blood Covenant has *so much* to do with who we are in the Lord Jesus Christ*.

*A.*

*All *the things that *we have in Christ*, were *made ours by the Blood of Jesus*, & *that's part of the Blood Covenant*.

*B.*

*In a Blood Covenant* there are *8 ways or steps to be followed* *when entering* into a *covenant* with someone.

*C.*

In the *O.

T.* *people* usually *only followed 2 or 3* of these *steps*.

*Jesus actually complied with all 8* when He entered into a covenant with us.

*1.*

The *1st* *step* would be to *exchange coats or garments*.

*a.*

This was a *very important* step.

This act *symbolized that all I have is yours & all that you have is mine*.

*i.*

*David & Jonathan did that* & you can *read it* for your self *later* in (*1SAM 18:1–4*).

*b.*

*Didn't Jesus also do that with mankind*?

*i.*

But *Jesus gave* us *more than* His *earthly garments*.

*iii.*

The *2nd* step would be to *exchange weapons*.

*a.*

Jonathan & David did that (*1SAM 18:4*)

                                  *b.*

*Jesus gave* us a *weapon*, the *sword of the Spirit* that is the *Word* of God.

                                  *c.* *This step signifies* that *all their strength belongs to you*.

*3.*

The *3rd* step was to *exchange names in some way*.

(Take 1st name & use it as the last name.)

*a.*

This would *give* you the *power of attorney* to all that belonged to your covenant partner.

*i.*

You would have a *legal right to use that name*.

*b.*

*Jesus gave us His name to use*.

*i.*

He said in (*JOHN 16:23*) “Whatsoever ye shall *ask* the Father *in my name*, he will give {it} you.”

*ii.*

He also said in (*MARK 16:17–18*) “And these signs shall follow them that believe; *In my name* shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”

*4.*

The *4th *step in entering into a covenant *is called the **blood cutting*.

*a.*

A *cut was made on the wrists or palms* of 2 people's hands.

They would then *Shake hands or mix the blood together*.

*i.*

*From that point* on you became *blood brothers*.

*b.*

*When Jesus shed His Blood on the cross we began to enter into a covenant relationship with Him*.

*i.*

But *when did Jesus' blood mix with ours*?

*Jesus* was *saying* in these Vs that *If you want to have eternal life you need to enter into a Covenant with me*.
