HOOK

Take a selfie with your Bible & Journal
Yesterday we started with Chapter 2 of the Gospel of John— and in it was the very first recorded miracle performed by Jesus— the wedding in Cana
If you’re going to just read through without meditating— at a glance it will seem irrelevant to many of its readers— they’re not getting married or already married!
But when you carefully read the pericope [short story]— the Holy Spirit will lead you the some “timeless principles” from the story that was applicable before, and still applicable today and forever
From the story of the wedding in Cana, we learned 3 “timeless” principles:
That we can go to Jesus with our problems
That He will answer our prayers in his time— not your time
And that we must always obey His will
Lets continue with the story
Stone pots were used for storing water for ritual purification— sanctification
Jars are empty— represents people without the living water
Jesus— living water
New wine into new wineskin
Reading between the lines
Transformation
What could this miracle mean in my life?
The best is saved for last

BOOK

John 2:6–12 The Living Bible
6 Six stone waterpots were standing there; they were used for Jewish ceremonial purposes and held perhaps twenty to thirty gallons each. 7 Then Jesus told the servants to fill them to the brim with water. When this was done he said, “Dip some out and take it to the master of ceremonies.” 9 When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come from (though, of course, the servants did), he called the bridegroom over. 10 “This is wonderful stuff !” he said. “You’re different from most. Usually a host uses the best wine first, and afterwards, when everyone is full and doesn’t care, then he brings out the less expensive brands. But you have kept the best for the last!” 11 This miracle at Cana in Galilee was Jesus’ first public demonstration of his heaven-sent power. And his disciples believed that he really was the Messiah. 12 After the wedding he left for Capernaum for a few days with his mother, brothers, and disciples.
' Juan 2:6-12
Reading between the lines and asking the right questions are very important techniques to understand the Bible

LOOK

JESUS TOLD THE SERVANTS TO FILL THEM TO THE BRIM WITH WATER
Stone water jars was used to store water for ritual purification— ceremonial cleansing before they worship
These empty jars could represent people— and water could represent life
Jesus said something about the”living water”— you will see this when we get to Chapter 4::14— whoever drinks this water will never be thirsty again— indeed will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life
Life without Jesus is empty
TASTED THE WATER THAT WAS NOW WINE
Jesus transformed the water into wine— see the process here?— from being an empty jar [empty life], Jesus fills it with life giving water [John baptized with water]— then from being a spring of water welling up to eternal life— Jesus transformed it into wine
In the synoptic gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John— they spoke of wine— that new wine needs fresh wineskins— transformation
Mark 2:22 The Living Bible
22 You know better than to put new wine into old wineskins. They would burst. The wine would be spilled out and the wineskins ruined. New wine needs fresh wineskins.”
BUT YOU HAVE KEPT THE BEST FOR THE LAST
With Jesus— the best is yet to come
A lot of Christians are wondering if this is a license to drink— Jesus turning water into wine is an excuse to drink— even during the Lord’s final supper with his disciples they drank wine— let me take you to a couple of scriptures the speaks about excessive drinking
Proverbs 23:20–21 NIV
20 Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, 21 for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.
Ephesians 5:18 The Living Bible
18 Don’t drink too much wine, for many evils lie along that path; be filled instead with the Holy Spirit and controlled by him.
