Welcome to Holy Week. Today we begin the first of 5 devotions that will be available online for you to work through. Our focus this week will be around the last evening Christ spent with his disciples in the Upper Room, in the Garden, all the way through his crucifixion. Today we begin in the Upper Room gathered for celebrating the Passover with our Rabbi (Teacher), Jesus.
Some simple suggestions for these devotions. Quiet yourself. Go slow. Listen for the Rabbi’s heartbeat.
Scripture: Read John 13:1-20 slowly.
Spend a minute or two in silence reflecting on the passage you just read. Put yourself in the room; what do you see, hear, smell, taste, feel?
I saw...
I heard...
I smelled...
I tasted...
I felt...
Read the passage slowly, again. Take your time.
What was something that stood out to you? Was there anything different that stood out the second time that you missed the first?
The duty of washing a guests feet was that of a servant. It was a humiliating role for anyone to be assigned. And yet, our Teacher, Jesus Himself does this very thing. He is gathered with His disciples (those that fervently followed Him, and the one who would betray Him; all of whom would desert Him), and he chooses to become the servant of ALL of them.
John 13:14 ESV
If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
The disciples, like most Jews of the time, expected the Messiah to be an authority and overthrow the oppressive government. The Rabbi, Jesus, comes in the form of a servant. The above verse is a challenge to all of us, ask yourself:
Whose feet am I washing? Whose feet am I refusing to wash? In other words, Who am I humbling myself for, and to whom do I refuse to humble myself?
Pray: Lord Jesus, you humbled yourself to become human even to the point of death on a cross. Teach me to serve as you served. Give me a heart for ____________________ and allow me to see them as you see them. Give me a heart for service that I might serve ____________________ to your glory. AMEN.
