Proverbs 13:12 states this…
Proverbs 13:12 NIV
Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.
Israel… in fact mankind had been greatly longing for a promise to be fulfilled that had been given long before… and this would be the day … no longer would the heart ache in waiting. God had made a promise and that promise was about to be fulfilled!!! Jesus was coming riding on a donkey, but what promise, what longing were the people so excited about???
This promise was made in the beginning… Genesis 3 gives us the origin of sin…
Adam and Eve’s disobedience destroyed God’s perfect work
Sin would separate mankind from God
BUT GOD… Promises to make right what man had wronged, to restore what man had broken
Genesis 3:15 gives us this promise God gave...
Genesis 3:15 NASB95
And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.”
Adam and Eve understood this promise and would share it with generations to come… Eve misunderstood the timing, and Identity of this promise in he (Behold or Look!) statement in Genesis 4:1
Genesis 4:1 NASB95
Now the man had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain, and she said, “I have gotten a manchild with the help of the Lord.”
The Moody Bible Commentary a. The Priority of Heart Attitude (4:1–8)

Eve’s statement is to be translated, “I have acquired a male, the LORD.” Eve’s expectation about Cain is that he was none other than the promised “seed” of 3:15, who, as the coming Seed, would restore humanity to its prefall ideal by “crushing” Satan’s head and ending the reign of sin over creation.

As God would reveal more of Himself and His Word to man over the generations we would see things clearer…
In Genesis 12:3 God declares it will be through Abraham’s seed that the promise would come
Genesis 12:3 NASB95
And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”
This would come through his son of promise Issac
Issac’s son Jacob would be chosen by God to continue the promise
Jacob would have 12 sons and God would change his name to Israel (one who wrestles with God)
From those twelve Judah (Genesis 49) was chosen who one day would from his “seed or line” would come a king...
King David… He wanted to build God a temple and bless God, instead God blessed David 2 Samuel 7:16
2 Samuel 7:16 NASB95
“Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever.” ’ ”
Not only would the promised one come and restore, He would be a king!
The Prophets sent to Israel would remind them of this promise time and again
Zechariah 9:9 would declare how He would come
Zechariah 9:9 NASB95
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, Humble, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
Isaiah would declare Him in great detail including His birth
And Daniel would declare a promise that would even allow people to know the day
The last prophet, the forerunner to the Messiah John the Baptist declared this… John 1:29
John 1:29 NASB95
The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
Eve was looking, hoping with great anticipation… seeing her boy she cried “Look/behold”
Rightly John would say to all who had been waiting, hearts eager would point to Christ… Behold the Lamb
The day had come for the longing the hope to be fulfilled John 12:12-19
John 12:12–19 NASB95
On the next day the large crowd who had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, and began to shout, “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel.” Jesus, finding a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written, Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your King is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.” These things His disciples did not understand at the first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of Him, and that they had done these things to Him. So the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead, continued to testify about Him. For this reason also the people went and met Him, because they heard that He had performed this sign. So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are not doing any good; look, the world has gone after Him.”
Even those closest to Him didn’t get it at first, but when they looked back they got it!
This Jesus was the Messiah
They all loved Him, worshiped Him
Quickly over the week, many would dessert Him, one would betray Him
And in just a few days Pilate would stand before a people, Jew and Gentile, male and female, slave and free and declare one last time (Behold the Man) not even realizing what he was saying but declaring rightly...
It was the right time
It was the right man
It was the only way… BEHOLD the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!!!
A longing fulfilled is a tree of life… and on that tree He gave His life so you and I could have eternal life!
