Today is Palm Sunday. It’s the day we celebrate Jesus triumphant enter into Jerusalem. Today also make the start of event that lead to Jesus being crucified on Friday. All the gospel Matt Mark Luke and John all give an account of Jesus entry. Today we will mostly be in Luke. IF you have your bible you can turn to Luke 19:28-40 or you can follow ago on the screen in a few min.
Before we look at the scripture let me set the stage a little.
Luke 19:1 CSB
He entered Jericho and was passing through.
Jericho is 14 mile or 22.5 Km away for Jerusalem about a Day walk.
Jesus meets Zacchaeus story of how Zacchaeus want to see Jesus so bad that he climb up into a tree to see him because the crowd was so big that Zacchaeus couldn’t see.
The Jesus tell him that he as come to save the Lost.
Luke 19:11 CSB
As they were listening to this, he went on to tell a parable because he was near Jerusalem, and they thought the kingdom of God was going to appear right away.
The people thought that Jesus was there to overthrow Roman in Judaea. instead Jesus tells them a parable to show that it will be some time before this happens but some of the people still didn’t understand and they still thought that He was
Luke 19:28–40 CSB
When he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. As he approached Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples and said, “Go into the village ahead of you. As you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say this: ‘The Lord needs it.’ ” So those who were sent left and found it just as he had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” “The Lord needs it,” they said. Then they brought it to Jesus, and after throwing their clothes on the colt, they helped Jesus get on it. As he was going along, they were spreading their clothes on the road. Now he came near the path down the Mount of Olives, and the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles they had seen: Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest heaven! Some of the Pharisees from the crowd told him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” He answered, “I tell you, if they were to keep silent, the stones would cry out.”
Bethphage is traditionally located less than 1.5 km east of Jerusalem on the southeast slope of the Mount of Olives.
Why a Donkey?
Colt?
less than 4 years old
The Donkey fulfilled a prophecy
Zechariah 9:9 CSB
Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout in triumph, Daughter Jerusalem! Look, your King is coming to you; he is righteous and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
Donkey symbolized Peace
in those days. Horse were used only for at war time. When someone road in on a horse it meant they were goin to war or coming back from a great war.
A Donkey on the other hand was used at all the time for transportation. King Solomon use a donkey when he road into Jerusalem to be become king.
It was a way that Jesus used to say that he was not going to throw the Romans out. But that he was coming in peace.
Matthew give a little bit of a different take on the story so I want it talk a little about what Matthew said because it raises other question.
Matthew 21:7 CSB
They brought the donkey and its colt; then they laid their clothes on them, and he sat on them.
Why two Donkey?
The mother was most likely brought ago to help keep the unbroken colt calmer doing the noisy entrance.
also want to make sure this know Jesus only road on one donkey if we look back at the verse in Matthew
Matthew 21:7 CSB
They brought the donkey and its colt; then they laid their clothes on them, and he sat on them.
when it say it sat on them it referring to the clothes not the animal.
Why lay Clothes and Palm Branches down?
Luke 19:36 CSB
As he was going along, they were spreading their clothes on the road.
Matthew 21:8 CSB
A very large crowd spread their clothes on the road; others were cutting branches from the trees and spreading them on the road.
Why lay Clothes and Palm Branches down?
The laying of the clothes symbolized that crowd submission to Jesus as king.
an act of homage to Jesus as king. Remember they still thought that Jesus coming to destroy the romans
symbolizes a Victory and goodness.
about 6 to 12 feet long. the whole area had Palm tree all over the place.
Everyone praised him!
Luke 19:38 CSB
Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest heaven!
Matthew 21:9 CSB
Then the crowds who went ahead of him and those who followed shouted: Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!
Hosanna!
Saviour. Save
they were ready for the kingdom to start.
Luke 19:40 CSB
He answered, “I tell you, if they were to keep silent, the stones would cry out.”
All creation was made to worship this King Lord of All.
Jesus is our Saviour!
he came for you and I so we can be forgiven of sin. be able to have a eternal life with our heavenly Father.
The donkey awakened, his mind still savoring the afterglow of the most exciting day of his life. Never before had he felt such a rush of pleasure and pride.
He walked into town and found a group of people by the well. “I’ll show myself to them,” he thought.
But they didn’t notice him. They went on drawing their water and paid him no mind.
“Throw your garments down,” he said crossly. “Don’t you know who I am?”
They just looked at him in amazement. Someone slapped him across the tail and ordered him to move.
“Miserable heathens!” he muttered to himself. “I’ll just go to the market where the good people are. They will remember me.”
But the same thing happened. No one paid any attention to the donkey as he strutted down the main street in front of the market place.
“The palm branches! Where are the palm branches!” he shouted. “Yesterday, you threw palm branches!”
Hurt and confused, the donkey returned home to his mother.
“Foolish child,” she said gently. “Don’t you realize that without Him, you are just an ordinary donkey?”
Just like the donkey who carried Jesus in Jerusalem, we are most fulfilled when we are in the service of Jesus Christ. Without him, all our best efforts are like “filthy rags” (Isaiah 64:6) and amount to nothing. When we lift up Christ, however, we are no longer ordinary people, but key players in God’s plan to redeem the word.
