When was the last time you were perfectly content?

When was the last time you were perfectly content?

Vacation in Cincinnati
I remember thinking, “I don’t need anything else in my life. Right now, in this moment, this is enough.”
Has anyone ever experienced that before?
It’s easy when everything is going well (socially, financially, physically, spiritually)
It’s difficult to make that statement when everything is falling apart.
What is enough for you?
Matthew 6:25–34 NKJV
25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? 28 “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

1) There is more to life than our physical needs

Our approach is to get more than we give.
Compare the number of retail stores to the number of places that give things away.
Storage industry
We have yard sales so that we can get something (money) for stuff that we don’t need or want anymore
We are wired towards self and consumerism.
This leads to constant anxiety and worry.
When your life is consumed with getting more than giving, you can never be content.
Matthew 6:19–21 NKJV
19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

The value of a life is always measured by how much of it is given away.

Don’t get so preoccupied with getting, that you can’t respond to what God has already given.

2) There is more to life than just this life

Backstory of Lazarus
John 11:17–27 NKJV
17 So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days. 18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles away. 19 And many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. 20 Now Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met Him, but Mary was sitting in the house. 21 Now Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.” 23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 Martha said to Him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. 26 And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?” 27 She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”

God created time for the sake of humans
God is outside of time (eternal)
When we pass out of this world, we will step out of the confines of time.
Near Death Experiences
We get so wrapped up in our time on earth
Rope example
Pi example in math 22/7
There is more to life than our life on Earth.

When you are focused on your life on Earth, fear will consume you.

Very few of us want to leave this world.
It’s all we know. It’s all we have experienced.
If your hope and trust is in Jesus Christ as your Savior then this life is not all that there is.
Eternity in View
In houses of clay we live
And we strive to make them lush, keep them posh
We forget they weren’t made to last forever
A day will come for us
To shed the terrestrial, don the celestial
We need the Maker to prepare us for this
His plan was set in time
That if we the gospel believe, His Son receive
We will live with Him and be glorified
Today may be the day
To forsake self and sin, be made clean within
So you can live with eternity in view

What is enough?

Is Jesus enough?

If Jesus never did another miracle in your life, never answered another prayer, never spoke to you through his word...if Jesus did nothing else in your life, would what he has done on the cross be enough?
2 Corinthians 12:7–10 NKJV
7 And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. 8 Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. 9 And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Is the saving grace that Jesus gave from the cross enough for you?
It is easy to say yes, but do we really believe it?

The High-Risk Prayer is Jesus, You are Enough

The challenge this week is to pray that prayer with honesty.
Jesus, You are enough
If you did nothing else
If you don’t heal my relative
If you don’t provide a job
If you don’t stop this virus
If you don’t provide the promotion
If I leave this life on earth
Jesus, Your are Enough
Your grace is sufficient
I need nothing else
