Flee from Idolatry

14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. 15 I speak as to wise men; judge for yourselves what I say. 16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? 17 For we, though many, are one bread and one body; for we all partake of that one bread.

18 Observe Israel after the flesh: Are not those who eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar? 19 What am I saying then? That an idol is anything, or what is offered to idols is anything? 20 Rather, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to have fellowship with demons. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons. 22 Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?

14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.

Paraphrase

Therefore my favorite people, run away from material representations of a god. I tell you because you have a good judgement: examine what I tell you.

What is the blood of Christ?

It symbolizes the shed blood during the Crucifixion

It symbolizes a penalty, sentence, punishment for a conviction of a wrong we carried out.

It symbolizes a new life for us.

Those who except the Christ as the sacrifice for our sins are like those who were in a court room and told they were pardoned, paid up and free to go, and they left the court room.

Those who do not except the Christ are still sitting in the court room looking at the judge, refusing to be pardoned and want to pay the price for their crimes.

My question is why not take the pardon?

And isn’t it the same with the loaf of bread we break and eat? Don’t we take into ourselves the body, the very life, of Christ? Because there is one loaf, our many-ness becomes one-ness—Christ doesn’t become fragmented in us. Rather, we become unified in him. We don’t reduce Christ to what we are; he raises us to what he is.
