Determine God’s will and the path that we should be on

Scripture

Proverbs 3:5–6 ESV
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Prayer

One thing that I want for our Church and for each of you, is that we be on the right and the straight path.

However, what we often see are churches and individuals who meander in their faith and obedience to Christ.
Like a river that meanders through a field, taking the path of least resistance wherever it goes.
The person who meanders or wanders, often does so because of unwise and even sinful choices that we make that take us out of the will of God.
We however are to be on the on the straight path, the direct route which will bring us to the goal of living our lives for Jesus Christ and his glory.
Like a channel which is being dug out of the hard ground, the straight path is the most direct route, but not necessarily the easiest path.
Jesus referred to it as the narrow path, because it is the road least taken by people. It is the road less traveled.
Matthew 7:13–14 ESV
“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
Others names for the straight path.
Enter by the narrow gate
Walking in the light
1 John 1:7 ESV
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
Practicing Righteousness
1 John 2:29 ESV
If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him.
John 14:6 ESV
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
1john 2:2
One thing is sure; we want to be on the straight path. The path that leads to holiness and righteousness, peace and joy. That is the wisdom that the book of Proverbs is offers to us today.
On thing is sure we want to

How does one stay on the straight path?

God will make our path straight by giving us an example for us! His Son, Jesus
As we have already said:
John 14:6 ESV
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Therefore, the straight path is to follow the example of Jesus and his life.

We are not to lean on our own understanding!

Each of us has a world view which is wrong.
based upon only what we can see
based upon only what we know
At best our knowledge of any given situation is incomplete.
But the Bible teaches that we have a sinful nature. Even what we do know is corrupted by our fleshly desires
We don’t see the world and spiritual things the way that they really are.
Because we have a wrong world view and a selfish nature - we make wrong choices, wrong decisions
Proverbs 22:8 ESV
Whoever sows injustice will reap calamity, and the rod of his fury will fail.
Proverbs 21:8 ESV
The way of the guilty is crooked, but the conduct of the pure is upright.
Prov 22
Prov
Do not lean on your own understanding! - Chair which is rickety.
When you lean on your own understanding (usually the path of least resistance) your path will be a meandering and a wandering full of difficulties that you have brought upon your self.

We are to in all ways acknowledge God!

In all ways
every aspect of your life
everything that you do
1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV
So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
Acknowledge him
As your Creator - the one who know you and everything about your. The hairs on your head, your thoughts, the desires of your heart
As your Lord - your master, commander, God
As your friend - One who sticks closer that a brother
Proverbs 18:24 ESV
A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
Acknowledge him as Savior
the one who died for you
the one who paid your debt
the one who continues to intercede for you

We are in all ways to acknowledge for God, who he is and what he has done for us!

Finally, we are to trust in the Lord with all of our heart.

Our trust is in the Lord only
More that an intellectual belief
It is a receiving of who that person is and all that he does
John 1:12 ESV
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,
It is a leaning, or placing your weight upon knowing it will not fail you.
Leaning on a shovel - someone can kick it out from beneath you causing you to fall. Not so with Jesus! He is trustworthy with our eternal salvation.
Proverbs 21:2 ESV
Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the heart.
Therefor we are to trust in him fully with all of our heart
Our Heart in the Bible
our intellect
our affections or desires
Our desires need to come under the Lordship of Christ
our will
We leave nothing in reserve

Conclusion

Are you trusting Christ fully and totally today?
As a christian, you will be most joyful and happy, especially during stressful times, when you trust fully in the Lord with all your heart.
Then he will make your path straight.
In closing, let’s remember the words of that great hymn, “Trust and Obey”
When we walk with the Lord
In the light of His Word
What a glory He sheds on our way
While we do His good will
He abides with us still
Trust and obey
For there's no other way
To be happy in Jesus
But to trust and obey
Not a shadow can rise
Not a cloud in the skies
But His smile quickly drives it away
Not a doubt nor a fear
Not a sigh nor a tear
Can abide while we trust and obey
Trust and obey
For there's no other way
To be happy in Jesus
But to trust and obey
