Matthew 5:13–16 NIV84
13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. 14 “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

1. You are made to give the world flavor

Salt was used to flavor things
Salt was used to preserve items
Salt was used to clean

2. Taste the quality of your life and service

You are the salt - statement of importance
You are the salt - statement of challenge
Salt of the earth - statement of contact
You have to be in the world
You have to interact with the world
But, you must make the world better not bitter

3. You are made to illuminate the world

No one can hide your light
If the light is on, darkness flees
Light removes darkness
Darkness will never cover the light

4. Your light should be displayed

Once the light is on, others need to see it
Jesus is the Light and His light shines through us
Don’t let the darkness of this world cause your light to go dim
Give light to everyone you are with
Give light, don’t give judgment

5. Let your light shine

You can dim your own light
Let your light shine before men
Let the light guide you
You don’t guide the light
Walk with light in front of you and shadows fall behind you
Walk with light in back of you and shadows go in front of you
Others need to see how you live
How you live and what you do can cause others to praise the Father
Are you causing praise for the Father?
Are you causing others to be afraid of the Father?
Your light should be like His light
His light shines on the righteous and the unrighteous
Just let your light shine - you don’t dictate who deserves light
