BOOK

John 1:6–13 NIV
6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. 9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

LOOK

WHOSE NAME WAS JOHN
During my introduction to this verse by verse study of the Gospel of gave you some information about the author— John— the beloved— the baptist— son of Zechariah— mother is Elizabeth [old age]— brother of James— John was born few months ahead of Jesus
He is known to be the the forerunner of the Messiah— Prophesied by Malachi 4:5-6
John’s ministry began around 29 AD in the Judean wilderness
He was the one who baptized Jesus at the Jordan river
His primary message was to call the people for repentance
A WITNESS

John’s mission is articulated in legal terms; he is a witness coming to testify
SO THAT THROUGH HIM [JESUS] ALL MIGHT BELIEVE
The preaching of John was intended to inspire faith in God pointing people to Jesus
That God did not send a messenger, He sent His very own Son the means of creation itself
THE TRUE LIGHT
John was alluding to the Messiah— Jesus
THE WORLD DID NOT RECOGNIZE HIM
The world— kosmos, it occurs 78 times throughout the Gospel of John
Sometimes it refers broadly to the whole created order— but most of the time it refers specifically to humanity in rebellion against God and hostile to Christ
If you fast forward to , you will see these Jesus said…
John 7:7 NIV
7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that its works are evil.
BUT HIS OWN PEOPLE DID NOT RECEIVE HIM
Not only did the entire world not recognize its Creator, but God’s chosen people rejected their messiah
HE GAVE THE RIGHT TO BECOME CHILDREN OF GOD
Unlike the people of who rejected Him, those who accepted Jesus as Messiah are the true “children of God”
Nicodemus [member of the Jewish ruling council] had a conversation with Jesus— he was impressed with the signs that Jesus did— he said, no one could perform such signs if God were not with Him
Jesus
Fast forward again in
John 3:3 NIV
3 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”
That is where the word “Born Again” Christians was derived from— not religion, but relation with God
Nicodemus replied, how can someone be born when they are old?
And that was when Jesus clarified
John 3:5–6 NIV
5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.
