Love is Always At the Core

Love Isn’t OK With Betrayal

John 13:21 ESV
After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.”

Love Isn’t OK With Betrayal

It Wasn’t the Knowing
It wasn’t the why
It was how Judas got there
It was what would happen to Judas
Satan’s hatred is always deadly

Those Jesus Loves Aren’t OK Either

John 13:22–24 ESV
The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table at Jesus’ side, so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus of whom he was speaking.

Those Jesus Loves Aren’t OK Either

It Was the Knowing
Jesus could be believed
Who would it be?
Could they trust one another?
Could they trust themselves?
They didn’t hear what Jesus said

The Enemy of Love Betrays

John 13:27–28 ESV
Then after he had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.” Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him.

The Enemy of Love Betrays

The Betrayer Is Satan’s Plot
Breaking love’s bonds is painful
Even Jesus would rather have it over
Judas Must Fulfill His Part
Under Satan’s influence
Yet God Is In Control of the Plan
The rest still don’t see it
They are still on the hook

Love Will Still Overcome

John 13:31 ESV
When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him.
John 13:33 ESV
Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’

Love Will Still Overcome

Jesus Knows What’s Next
The Cross is unavoidable
But Love carries on
No matter what it takes
He Will Be Our Sacrifice
In a just a little while
Not hide and seek–
Just the path he must walk alone

Love Must Reproduce In Us

John 13:34–35 ESV
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Love Must Reproduce In Us

The Third Command of Jesus
First Command: Love God
Second Command: Love Others
Third Command: Love Each Other
Disciples of Jesus Love Like Jesus
Love for the good of others
Love sacrificially
Love so the world sees it

Real Love Needs Real Examples

John 13:36–37 ESV
Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow afterward.” Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”

Real Love Needs Real Examples

Peter is Still Misdirected
He thinks of a place
Jesus thinks of the Cross
Not for Peter now
It would be for the wrong reasons
It must be for Love as Jesus will show him
Peter thinks he could sacrifice himself now
Jesus must lead him through the pain
Then he will be ready

Our Love Must Become More

John 13:38 ESV
Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.

Our Love Must Become More

Really Peter? Don’t You Know Yourself?
In just a while you will say you don’t even know me.
Time after time after time.
Jesus knows this– it doesn’t change Love
Love shows poorly when we stop breathing
Love shows truly when we live boldly for Jesus

Love Is the New Commandment

Love is Always At the Core
Jesus Doesn’t Ask For Our Death for Him
He asks for our Lives Surrendered for Him
Will you do this daily? Hourly?
Will you do this In this minute?
