Introduction: Miracles all around us.

1. The gift of miracles is a Spirit-given power.

A. Power over disease Mark 6:5

Jesus couldn’t do any miracles except heal a few sick people at Nazareth Mark 6:5

B. Power over demons Mark 9:38, 39. Luke 4:36, Mark 9:29

demon in a man in the synagogue in Capernaum Luke 4:31-37
demon in the boy who rolled on the ground Mark 9:14-29

C. Power over nature Mark 4:35-41, Matthew 14:22-33

D. Power over matter John 2:1-11, Luke 9:12-17

2. Miracles result in wonder or awe. Mark 2:12, Mark 6:51, Luke 5:9

A. The people were amazed when Jesus healed the paralytic man let down through the roof Mark 2:12

B. The disciples were amazed when Jesus walked on water Mark 6:51

C. The disciples were astonished at the huge catch of fish Luke 5:9

3. Miracles validate those who do them. John 6:14, Acts 9:42, Acts 13:12, 2 Cor 12:12, Acts 19:11-12

A. After Jesus fed the 5,000 the people said “This is . . . the prophet” John 6:14

B. After Peter raised Dorcas from the dead it became known and many believed. Acts 9:42

C. After Paul blinded Elymas the proconsul believed being astonished at the teaching of the Lord! Acts 13:12

D. miracles were the sign of an apostle 2 Cor. 12:12, handkerchiefs from Paul Acts 19:11-12

4. Miracles appear in clusters in the Bible.

A. The exodus and wilderness wandering. Exodus 7-17

B. The prophets Elijah and Elisha 1 Kings 17-19, 2 Kings 2-7

C. Jesus and the early Church. Matthew - Acts

5. Miracles spread the gospel. Romans 15:18-19, Acts 4:33

Miracles were to spread of the Gospel, to bring about faith. Rom 15:18-19; Acts 4:33

6. Implications John 4:48, Luke 11:29, 2 Thessalonians 2:9, Exodus 7:11-12

A. We are NOT to seek signs John 4:48; Luke 11:29

B. Not all supernatural power comes from God. 2 Thess. 2:9, Exodus 7:11-12

C. The gift of miracles isn’t evident today.

The gift may not be operative but in the broader sense of miracles, we should pray for miracles, God’s power is still at work today.
