Family

H. - Having a Foundation Element
Welcome to the family!
Family is foundational for us as individuals.
Every Family has its history.
Every family has its own traditions and treasured stories. Many spend a great deal of research and energy tracing their genealogies to better understand their earlier ancestors and where they come from.
The Christian family, the church, has a founding story of power and of hope.
Our genealogy goes all the way back to the beginning. (Genesis and John’s Gospel.) We have a lineage of promise that goes all the way back to Abraham!
And we have a bloodline that goes all the way back to Pentecost!
(Volunteer to read)
Acts 2:41–47 KJV 1900
Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. And all that believed were together, and had all things common; And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.
The story of this local church, Gospel Tabernacle, reaches back all the way back to that book of Acts church. Gospel Tabernacle is the same family tree as the apostles!
Peter is our brother! John! Paul!
Pentecostal means we share in the same experience as the one on the day of Pentecost recorded in Acts. NOTICE: They didn’t go preaching that this experience was optional, but that it was needed.
Apostolic means “like the apostles”.
The Book of Acts is titled “Acts of the Apostles”
We believe, preach, and practice the same message that the apostles did.

Gospel Tabernacle’s History

The Apostolic Church in Henryetta has a long and storied history. It appears that the first church services were held in a tent, erected around 1919 by the founding pastor, John Renison. The church was appropriately named The Renison Mission. Later a crude wooden structure was built, consisting of sawdust floors and pole-supported side walls that were on hinges so they could be raised.
Willia B. Peters became the pastor in 1932. Under her leadership, the congregation eventually built a tile, block-type building, voted to affiliate with the UPC, and renamed the church Gospel Tabernacle. In 1970 a new sanctuary was built, and C. A. Nelson preached the dedication service.
Four lots directly behind the church were donated to Gospel Tabemacle by the Preston Cook family. The church later secured corner lots east of the current church property.
When Sister Peters suffered from physical problems in 1975,she invited her nephew C. Larry Grissom to serve as co-pastor. When Sister Peters resigned after sixty years devoted to ministry, Brother Grissom assumed the pastorate.
In March 2015, the Grissoms celebrated forty years of ministry in Henryetta. Under their leadership, the church constructed an educational unit, fellowship hall, and office complex. They also purchased four and one-half acres of property for future expansion purposes. Pastor Grissom was elected as Bishop and Rev. Joshua Bauer was elected Pastor on February 24th, 2015. Bro. Grissom finished his race on March 13, 2015.
Sis. Peters was affectionately known as “Sis. Bill”.
Bro. Grissom was known to family and close friends as “Buddy”.
Bro. Bauer is known to parents, siblings, and to no one else as “Bubba”.
A Household
Ephesians 2:19–22 KJV 1900
Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.
In this passage scripture no longer says that we are strangers but what? (verse 19) ______________________________________________________________
Who is the cornerstone of the Church? (verse 20) _________________________________________________________________
Why do you think scripture compares the church, or the assembly of Christian believers, to a household? _________________________________________________________________
Paul described the Church by comparing it to a family.
This portion of scripture is a letter written to the port city of Ephesus. A city that was immersed in a number of different religions.Paul explains that the Church is made up of pardoned sinners, who reflects the love God.The Church is a group of believers that are pursuing God together and are living in response to the transforming love of God in their lives.
We may have come from different walks of life, our stories of how e got here may look different person to person, and we may even feel at times like we are not very good Christian material, but God loves so much that He gives us His Spirit, His Word, and the love of fellow brothers and sisters of faith to help us and encourage us to grown in hope and purpose.
Guess where the model of different walks of life brethren comes from? The Jesus model.
We are a family!

Our Family Mission

In our nation’s history and even now in the present, when families immigrated to the United States, they had a purpose or a mission in mind.
(Volunterr to read)
Colossians 1:12–13 KJV 1900
Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
Inheritance implies family.
Translated us into (moved us from the world) into His kingdom.
As a Church Family, We have a mission.
Matthew 28:18–20 KJV 1900
And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Mark 16:15–18 KJV 1900
And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
Luke 24:45–49 KJV 1900
Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things. And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.
John 20:30–31 KJV 1900
And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
John 21:24–25 KJV 1900
This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true. And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.
Matthew and Mark gives us the Great Commission Statement.
Luke gives us more details of that statement. (opened their understanding to scripture, preached in all nations, witnesses)
John gives the account of Peter’s commission and also verifies that he himself is a witness of Christ.
Simply put, God transferred us from a world of darkness into a kingdom of light, and has commissioned us with a purpose.
(Ask volunteer to read)
1 Peter 2:9–10 KJV 1900
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
The Church is chosen by God to do what? (verse 9) _________________________________________________________________
Who are we now? (verse 10) _________________________________________________________________
Why do you think Jesus wants to use the Church to show people His marvellous light? _________________________________________________________________

Gospel Tabernacle’s Mission Statement

Taking Christ to every family, bringing the family into the church, becoming one family in Him.
Take-Bring-Become Family-Church-One
Gospel Tabernacle is known for being a spiritual hospital. HOSPITALity!
We believe strong families make strong churches.
We are reaching upward and reaching outward.
If we are not changing, we are not growing.
If we are not spiritually growing, then we are spiritually dying.
Living things change as they grow.
