Who Can Guess what my favorite book of the Bible is?
Introduction to the Book of Acts
— It is the third longest book in the New Testament
— It was likely written about thirty years after Christ’s death and resurrection
— It was written by Luke
— It was written to Theophilus, the same person the gospel of Luke was written to
— Luke was a Christian doctor
— Doctors in those days were not held in high esteem like they are today, and were actually usually slaves to a particular family or party
— Luke was a traveling companion of Paul
— He was also a part time historian
— He was an eye witness of many of the accounts in the book of Acts
— He was a gifted storyteller, theologian, and historian
ACTS 1:1-8

1. The Proofs of a Resurrected Saviour (v. 3)

The resurrection is an extremely important topic of the Bible, and it is a favorite of unbelievers to study. The resurrection is the core and central element of all of Christianity. If Christ did not resurrect, then everything we do or believe about Christianity is in vain. In 1 Corinthians chapter 14, it says

14 And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. 15 Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not. 16 For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised: 17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. 18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished. 19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. 20 But now is Christ risen from the dead

For centuries Portugal’s motto was “Nothing More Beyond.” Their world was limited to the familiar dimensions of the area around the Mediterranean Sea. They believed that to sail beyond the horizon, their border, would be to drop off the edge of the world. Eventually, voyagers discovered worlds beyond and brought back evidence to substantiate their claims. Decision makers were compelled to alter their motto to read, “More Beyond.”

Many of the followers of Jesus were not expecting Him to resurrect. They thought He was dead for good, gone up to Heaven to be with the Father. However, just like the portuguese, they realized that there was more beyond this life, and Jesus was the reason for it and the center for it.
a) Proven by His Personal Appearances
— After His death and resurrection, He first appeared to Mary and Mary Magdalene
says

8 And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word. 9 And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him. 10 Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.

— He then appeared to the eleven disciples
(wasn’t twelve because Judas killed himself)
verses 16 and 17 says

16 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. 17 And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted.

— He appeared to over 500 people at one time
1 Corinthians 15:6 KJV 1900
After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.
1 Corinthians 15:
This is noteworthy because it is not possible for many people to have a mass hallucination
— He appeared to Saul (Paul)
Actss 9:5 says

5 And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest

b) Proven by His Commitment to the Kingdom
— The messiah was supposed to establish the kingdom, this is one reason a lot of the Jews did not believe that Jesus was the messiah. However, He was establishing a heavenly kingdom and would establish a physical kingdom in the future
Matthew 13:11 KJV 1900
He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.
1 Corinthians 15:24–25 KJV 1900
Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power. For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.
1 Corinthians

2. The Promise of Our Heavenly Father (v. 4-5)

a) The Holy Spirit Would Enlighten Them
— All of the apostles were witnesses of the resurrected Jesus, and they would need that memory as they withstood challenges and persecution.
— one important aspect of the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to remind us of the truths that we need to know
John 16:13 KJV 1900
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
b) The Holy Spirit Would Empower Them
— The kind of witnessing that changes the world does not come from our own programs, labors or strength.
— World changing witnessing only comes when the power of the Holy Spirit is on the person sharing the gospel, when that power is present, great results will follow.
c) The Holy Spirit Would Embolden Them
— Something that always follows after being filled with the Spirit is boldness
Acts 4:31 KJV 1900
And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.
Acts 5:31 KJV 1900
Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.
If you pray for a filling of the Holy Spirit, God will grant it to you and will give you boldness.
d) The Holy Spirit would Encourage Them
John 16:
John 16:7 KJV 1900
Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
When we are in need of encouragement, support, and comfort, the Holy Spirit is there for us. The apostles were full of enthusiasm, but trials were sure to come. In their own strength, they would not be able to continue being effective witnesses. They needed encouragement and comfort from the Holy Spirit to get them through the difficult days.

On Friday, March 29, 1984, Robert Cunningham ate a meal of linguine and clam sauce at his favorite restaurant, Sal’s pizzeria, where he had been a regular customer for seven years. His waitress, Phyllis Penza, had worked at Sal’s for nineteen years.

After his meal Cunningham made a good-natured offer to Penza. He said she could either have a tip or split his winnings if his number was drawn in the upcoming New York lotto. Penza chose to take a chance on the lottery, and she and Cunningham chose the numbers together.

On Saturday night, Cunningham won. The jackpot was six million dollars. Then he faced the moment of truth. Would he keep his promise? Would he give the waitress a “tip” of three million dollars?

Cunningham, a police sergeant, husband, father of four, and grandfather of three, said, “I won’t back out. Besides, friendship means more than money.”

3 million dollars is a lot of money, but the promises of God are worth so much more, especially the promise of Heaven.

3. The Power of the of Early Church (v. 6-8)

a) A Priority on God’s Power
— This must be our priority today, the same power that fulled the apostles and made the early church grow explosively is available to us through the filling of the Holy Spirit. Jesus told them to wait until they had received His power, because without it, all their witnessing efforts would have been worthless.

In a seminary missions class, Herbert Jackson told how, as a new missionary, he was assigned a car that would not start without a push.

After pondering his problem, he devised a plan. He went to the school near his home, got permission to take some children out of class, and had them push his car off. As he made his rounds, he would either park on a hill or leave his car running. He used this ingenious procedure for two years.

Ill health forced the Jackson family to leave, and a new missionary came to that station. When Jackson proudly began to explain his arrangement for getting the car started, the new man began looking under the hood. Before the explanation was complete, the new missionary interrupted, “Why Dr. Jackson, I believe the only trouble is this loose cable.” He gave the cable a twist, stepped into the car, pushed the switch, and to Jackson’s astonishment, the engine roared to life.

For two years needless trouble had become routine. The power was there all the time. Only a loose connection kept Jackson from putting the power to work.

J. B. Phillips paraphrases Ephesians 1:19–20, “How tremendous is the power available to us who believe in God.” When we make firm our connection with God, his life and power flow through us.

Life can get tiresome and its easy to burn out, especially as a Christian, but if we have the power of God then we will have enough energy and motivation to overcome whatever is thrown our way.
b) A Priority on God’s Word
— They preached to people about Jesus (Living Word) from the Scriptures (Written Word).
Acts 8:35 KJV 1900
Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.
c) The Program was Witnessing
The plan that Jesus gave to the disciples was witnessing:
to their own community, then to the country, then to the continent, and finally to the entire world.
The world does not need our culture or fancy lofty philosophy or science, it needs the Gospel. As teenage Christians, you can make a huge difference in this community for Christ, and not just the community, but maybe the entire world.
Billy Graham was one of the most famous preachers of the last generation. He preached to more people than the apostles themselves. His preaching crusades started with teenagers known as Youth for Christ. Under this ministry, it is recorded that over 3.2 Million people got saved and converted to Christianity.
It’s a crazy thought, but y’all could make a difference, just like he did.
