John 14:16,17

Jesus was approaching His death, preparing disciples for His leaving.
READ PASSAGE

It’s here that Jesus speaks of the Spirit coming to the disciples.
This was fulfilled at Pentecost.
Jesus refers to the Spirit as *another Helper*, and *Spirit of Truth.*
If you were to do a study through the Scriptures you would find several other ministries associated with the Holy Spirit.
Bears spiritual fruit
Comforts
Convicts us of sin
Counsels
Enables Christian living
Enables worship
Fills
Gives spiritual gifts
Guides
Helps
Identifies us with Christ
????????????
Prays for us
Provides fellowship
Reveals Truth
Secures our salvation
Teaches

THAT’S A HUGE LIST!!
But there’s one missing, and that one makes all the other ministries of the Spirit that much better.
The Holy Spirit’s ministry to us is from a very specific location.
READ VS. 17

In addition to all the other ministries of the Spirit is the fact that He INDWELLS US.

Jesus accomplished most of these ministries while on earth.
But He was limited in location.
\\ *Every thought what it means for Spirit to be IN US?*
* *
1. Indwells ALL believers (not just good, smart, talented)

2.
Indwells COMPLETELY (not just part of Him, or for part of a day)

3.
Indwells IMMEDIATELY (don’t have to prove ourselves, earn His favor)

4.
Indwells FOR OUR GOOD (don’t have to worry if Spirit is having a good day or not)

5.
Indwells FOREVER       (PASSAGE)
*            *He will never leave you
You can never get rid of Him

So if Jesus was so concerned for us that He would ask the Father to send the Spirit to indwell all believers forever,

And if the Father loved us so much that He would send the Spirit to people like us to indwell us forever,

What should be our response??

*MULTI MEDIA*

That song had a lot of truth in it.
Our hearts do long to hear from Him
Many times He will show His power and make His presence known
He can stir our hearts and set our spirits free

But the song also has a couple question marks.
Come
The fact is that the Holy Spirit has already come.
He came at Pentecost, and never left.
Fill This Place
If the writer meant fill this place, the Spirit doesn’t do that anymore.
7 occurances in NT—all are filling people, not places.
In OT the presence or glory of God filled places like Mt. Sinai, tabernacle and
Temple

But in NT God fills people, not places

\\ *FILL—empower for Christian life and service*

Spirit indwells everybody all the time—but He FILLS very few, and not all the time.
Like having Incredible Hulk in your life and you make him sit over in a corner.
How To Be Filled?
1. Stop sinning (Galatians 5:16)
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.
2.
Submit to His control (Ephesians 5:18)
And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit

3.
Serve the Lord (Acts 4:31)
And when they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and /began /to speak the word of God with boldness.
